Department of Environment, Science and Innovation

Date: 1 week ago
City: Cairns, Queensland
Contract type: Full time
#Acareerthatmatters. #Acontributionthatcounts.

Everyone at our Department recognizes the importance of a healthy environment. Whatever your job with us, you’ll strive and innovate to shape a better future for Queensland. Our role is complex, and our work can be challenging - important work usually is. But your contribution will count, and so will you.

The Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to establish yourself as a Marine Park Ranger. You'll work hard to preserve and assist the delivery of annual work programs including compliance, fire and pest management, operational and visitor infrastructure and maintenance projects across marine and island protected estate in the Far North area of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) recognises the enormous value a clean environment, innovative society and economy, and vibrant culture makes to Queenslanders' lives. As a diverse organisation, the department brings together environment, heritage protection, national parks, science and youth affairs functions to help achieve government objectives for a better Queensland.

A purpose and a challenge that matter

You will be contributing as the 2IC support to an operational Ranger-in-Charge (Infrastructure) within the Far North Management Unit (FNMU), of the Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks Region (GBRMP). Whilst the position will participate in varied types of land and sea country field work, this role will specifically require specialist knowledge and skills in Assets and Infrastructure management, including any systems supporting the professional management of assets. This is a “hands on” operational ranger role and good physical health is a requirement of the position within the work unit requirements. Field work including working at sea on vessels, exposure to the sun (UV), hot / humid tropical temperatures, fire and smoke, registered chemicals and poisons, long hours of work (including weekend and night work), in remote areas, can be expected.

Whilst this position is based in Cairns, work within the FNMU requires regular and extended travel to other remote locations. This position will be required to participate in extended field trips, onboard a modern and fit for purpose vessel fleet, which may total to an estimated 70 or more nights at sea per year, away from the home base. These nights at sea will generally occur over 6 - 9 extended trips per year, working away. Rangers work on a roster basis which can also include regular weekend and public holiday work. Prior approved Overtime, Travel and Anchoring out allowances are payable consistent with the Parks and Wildlife Employees Award - State 2016 (PWEA), in addition to the basic salary structure. Eligible temporary candidates are entitled to relieving expenses as provided for in the Domestic Travel and Relieving Expenses Directive 13/23.

You'll Need

  • Resilience, pragmatism, tenacity and confidence in a regional or remote setting
  • To work well within a team, and communicate effectively with your peers and members of the public
  • The ability to form trusted relationships with First Nations partners and various other stakeholder groups
  • Ability to work across a varied work program, responsible for undertaking many different types of physical and technical tasks
  • Sound negotiation and conflict management skills
  • A sound understanding of conservation and natural resource management, marine operations and workplace health and safety (both physical and psychological)
  • Basic administration and computer skills
