About the role:

The Environment Protection Officer is a member of a team responsible for EPA's on-ground regulatory response in the region, including education, compliance monitoring and inspections, and managing non-compliance via regulatory notices and enforcement action. You will actively contribute to a positive organisational culture and ensure you achieve the highest standards of performance and integrity; and foster genuine partnerships across all levels of government, industry, and community to support the delivery organisational outcomes.

In this role you will:

  • Under the direction of the Team Leader, Environment Protection, and working closely with the Team Leader, Field Specialists - Contaminated Land, plan and deliver regulatory actions focussed on landfills and/or contaminated land to prevent harm to communities and environment from pollution and waste through education and engagement, compliance monitoring and inspections, and managing non-compliance with environmental laws via regulatory notices and enforcement action.
  • Actively contribute to the development of a positive and high performing team culture, including by identifying and implementing opportunities to improve teamwork practices.
  • As the place-based expert on contaminated land and landfills, provide expert advice and support capability building in the region; actively participate in the conduct of investigations (under the direction of Environmental Crime Branch); and the delivery of preventative projects and compliance programs aligned to EPA's regulatory priorities.
  • Participate in the response to environmental and public health emergencies and incidents.
  • Provide support and guidance to other team members, including the regional operations team, in delivering organisational priorities; contribute to the analysis, negotiation, and resolution of compliance issues; provide local intelligence to inform the development of preventative projects and compliance projects aligned to EPA's strategic regulatory priorities.

Skills and experience:

  • A relevant tertiary degree or qualification is desirable.
  • Successful completion of Authorised Officer and Field Response Officer training (on-job), or completion within a reasonable time frame from commencement in the role.
  • Significant experience in the management and/or regulation of contaminated land and/or landfills.
  • Ability to be present at times and locations as required to successfully perform the role. This is usually satisfied by the possession of a current Victorian driver's licence.
