The role

The Human Factors Specialist will lead the integration of human factors principles to enhance safety and operational efficiency across our Light Rail Networks in Sydney and Parramatta.

As a senior safety leader, this role is accountable for taking a strategic approach to risk mitigation and potential hazards. You will be required to apply project management and program controls to ensure timely and effective delivery of safety initiatives.

Responsible for producing high-quality documentation to support our Safety Management Systems (SMS) and demonstration of Safety Far As Is Reasonably Practicable (SFAIRP) compliance, you will deliver actionable insights, drive transformative change, and identify opportunities to optimise program safety and performance.

What You Bring

Advanced Knowledge of Human Factors Principles: Demonstrated expertise in human factors/ergonomics (e.g., cognitive psychology, workload analysis, human error assessment), with a degree or certification in human factors, psychology, or a related field, and proficiency in applying Human Factors standards including AS7470:2016.

Experience in Strategic Risk Management: Minimum of 5 years of experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating strategic risks, with proven ability to integrate human factors into enterprise risk management frameworks (e.g., ISO 31000) within transportation or safety-critical industries.

Proficiency in Human Reliability and Workload Analysis: Practical experience conducting human reliability assessments and workload evaluations, with skills in tools like task analysis, HEI (Human Error Identification), or simulation software to address operational and strategic risks.

Strong Regulatory and Compliance Expertise: In-depth understanding of rail safety regulations (e.g., RSNL) and industry standards, with experience ensuring compliance through human factors interventions, such as designing training programs or operational procedures.

Facilitation and Stakeholder Engagement Skills: Proven ability to lead cross-functional workshops and collaborate with diverse stakeholders (e.g., engineers, operators, regulators), with excellent communication skills to translate complex human factors concepts into actionable strategies for portfolio management.

Data Analysis and Reporting Capabilities: Experience in developing and tracking human factors-related KPIs (e.g., error rates, compliance metrics), with proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SPSS) and the ability to produce clear, evidence-based reports to inform strategic decision-making.
