About The Role

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is an executive function within V/Line which is responsible for the management of a wide range of legal and corporate governance issues. The OGC provides comprehensive advice, support and services to V/Line’s business units and executive leadership team on all aspects of V/Line’s operations for compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and to manage legal and governance risks. 

As our new Lawyer for Projects, you will have a critical role in supporting the Principal Lawyer – Projects to advise on all stages of a rail project’s lifecycle. Such projects could involve rail upgrades and renewals that directly impact the reliability and safety of V/Line’s operations. You will be responsible for coordinating with internal project teams and external state agencies and will be expected to understand pressure points, strategy and objectives of V/Line’s business.

In addition to supporting Projects, you will have the opportunity to generalise and will play a key role in providing legal advice to other business areas as required, including to the third party access and asset maintenance teams.

The successful candidate will effectively communicate the legal risks and issues involved in any decision, enabling informed strategic decisions within an acceptable risk profile across a variety of matters, including corporate and commercial, procurement, construction, property, litigation, safety and environmental laws.

About You

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Must have 3+ years post qualification experience, gained within a top-tier or mid-tier firm, or in house
  • Tertiary qualifications in Law: LLB
  • Unrestricted practicing certificate
  • Experience across construction (front or back end) and / or property law with a keen interest in the rail and transport sectors
  • Strong technical skills coupled with the ability to provide solutions focused legal advice in a practical, commercial and government context
  • Advanced drafting and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and management with a strong capability to work collaboratively
  • Excellent attention to detail and well developed analytical skills
  • Proactive approach with a desire to be an integral member of a supportive team
  • Positive and team first mindset, resilient and patient
  • Be willing to provide training and support to business stakeholders across all levels


Remuneration for this position is commensurate to the successful candidate’s aligned skills and experience to the position.

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023 / Asset Management Enterprise Agreement 2023).
