ASIC's Strategic Surveillance, Banking and Data team is looking for an experienced Analyst / Lawyer to work on key projects and activities.
The Strategic Surveillance, Banking and Data (SSBD) team delivers proactive surveillance outcomes across the Regulation & Supervision (R&S) group through surveillance expertise, running complex surveillances, leading group wide activities, surveillance projects within and between sector teams. The skills within the team will also be deployed to enable a focussed and swift response to specific ASIC wide or priority projects.
SSBD is responsible for the regulation and supervision of the banking sector and strategically important financial institutions. This includes proactive engagement with and monitoring of firms to understand and respond to emerging issues for the firm or industry and provide strategic direction and technical expertise for ASIC's work in the sector.
The team collaborates with other parts of ASIC in ensuring consistent and effective delivery of ASIC's regulatory priorities, including through the identification of supervision and surveillance best practice and sharing our knowledge and expertise. The data team, also within SSBD, designs and delivers specialist data analytics for R&S.
The role
An Analyst/Lawyer will work on complex tasks, contribute to projects and collaborate across teams, to implement best practice surveillance processes, and maintain strong relationships with key ASIC stakeholders.

The role
An Analyst/Lawyer will work on complex tasks, contribute to projects and collaborate across teams, to implement best practice surveillance processes, and maintain strong relationships with key ASIC stakeholders.
In Addition, You Will Be:
- Assisting with the delivery of thematic surveillances and ASIC wide or priority projects as required including planning and conduct of reviews, identifying, collecting and analysing information and data and formulating recommendations supported by evidence/ data.
- Analysing data and information to identify trends, patterns, and relationships on key regulatory issues, with the ability to represent qualitative and quantitative findings.
- Clear and concise communication and reporting on supervision, surveillance and projects, including creating high quality detailed reports, papers and documents for a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Supporting and participating in the planning and delivery of meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assessing applications to ASIC to exercise its discretionary powers, make recommendations and give effect to decisions.
- Maintaining knowledge of ASIC's regulatory framework and toolkit, relevant legislative and reporting requirements, domestic and international developments, and best industry practice models.
- Active use of best practice, data driven surveillance methodology and identification of new and improved ways to deliver priorities.
- ASIC4 – from $94,198 + 15.4% superannuation: candidates with minimum 3-5 years' relevant experience.
- EL1 – from $123,444 + 15.4% superannuation: candidates with minimum 5-6 years' relevant experience.
About You
The ideal candidate will have the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, engage in challenging discussions, and handle complex issues calmly and logically.
In Addition, You Will Have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification.
- Solid and relevant regulatory or professional services experience with broad knowledge of business models, business operations and regulatory requirements in the Australian financial services sector.
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and projects and take responsibility for outcomes.
- Strategic thinking, analytical, investigative and research skills.
- Conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to draw reasoned inferences from quantitative and qualitative data, and to reach robust and practical conclusions.
- Experience assessing, verifying, and challenging complex information, and making sound regulatory judgements.
- Experience applying regulatory or professional judgement and scepticism including the identification and assessment of regulatory risks, problems, or issues.
- Excellent writing and editing skills including the ability to distil key messages, strong attention to detail in all technical matters and a continuous improvement approach to process and practice.
