About The Role

The Strategic Market Reform team manages regulatory change to support AEMO’s priorities and energy market objectives through a proactive, coordinated and consistent approach in partnership with the business.

Reporting to the Manager – NEM Wholesale Reform, this role will see you evaluate regulatory problems, develop options and supporting evidence, and prepare documentation (submissions, papers, data analysis, reports) that may convince stakeholders of regulatory options necessary for AEMO to succeed. The aim is to support a consistent AEMO narrative on how regulatory frameworks should evolve through engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

This opportunity is a permanent full-time role available in any one of our Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne CBD offices.

What You Will Be Doing

You will complete work required under AEMO’s regulatory change framework, from the inception of a rule change to handover to staff implementing a final rule by completing regulatory tasks and analysis, drafting papers and developing AEMO’s regulatory positions.

You will also

  • Investigate complex regulatory problems.
  • Analyse and advise on the need for regulatory change and apply AEMO’s rule change framework.
  • Prepare proposals, submissions and supporting analysis for regulatory consultations, and assist in co-ordinating AEMO’s response.
  • Explain AEMO’s regulatory positions on matters relating to the wholesale market and market operations.
  • Consult with relevant staff and ensure accountability is clear for the implementation of Rule changes.
  • Support implementation of regulatory elements of major projects (such as through procedure consultations).
  • Complete ad-hoc data analysis, advice on regulatory issues in the wholesale market to investigate regulatory proposals.


What You Will Bring To The Role

You have an understanding of AEMO’s market operations, the ability to investigate regulatory matters, and an ability to discuss these with staff and external stakeholders, including briefing GM’s and Executives.

You possess

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant qualification in science, engineering, economics, law, commerce or finance.
  • Experience working in the Electricity Sector, preferably in the wholesale market.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex regulatory issues and present them to internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in completing data analysis with electricity wholesale market data, trading data and settlements, and the ability to interpret and present that data.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete set tasks and projects to time, quality and budget.
