Austal Australia is delivering multiple naval shipbuilding and sustainment programs for the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Border Force, and the Department of Defence, employing approximately 1,000 people in facilities in located Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory.
About The Opportunity
Austal and the Commonwealth of Australia are currently negotiating a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) that will support the Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Enterprise and the delivery of multiple new defence force shipbuilding projects, such as Landing Craft-Medium and Landing Craft-Heavy for the Australian Army.
Once signed, the SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce, as we deliver both existing and new programs under a long-term partnership. It will also enable the design and construction of vessels at our Henderson shipyard and marks a major step forward in establishing enduring shipbuilding capability within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia.
To achieve this, we are building a highly skilled team, to engage with local industry and supply chains, and work on complex, large-scale projects that reflect Austal’s proven capabilities and trusted performance.
Austal is seeking a strategic and forward-thinking Data Architect to design and manage the organisation’s data architecture. Reporting to the Digital Services Manager, this role plays a critical part in ensuring data is accessible, reliable, and aligned with the business needs under the Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA).

What’s Involved
- Designing scalable data architectures by developing and implementing secure, enterprise-wide models and integration strategies that align with SSA business strategies and technical requirements.
- Ensuring data integrity and quality by establishing and enforcing data governance frameworks, quality standards, and validation protocols to maintain consistent, accurate, and reliable enterprise data.
- Optimising database systems by recommending solutions for configuring information systems, managing data migration from legacy systems, and designing conceptual and logical database models.
- Standardising data models and metadata by developing and maintaining logical and physical data models and implementing metadata management practices to enhance clarity and reusability.
- Maintaining compliance and security by implementing data security policies and ensuring adherence to data privacy laws and industry regulations through effective controls and audits.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as Data Science or Information Technology, or working towards
- Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise data architectures including data warehousing solutions and real-time data pipelines
- In-depth knowledge of data management concepts, including data governance, data quality, and data integration
- Proficient in SQL, ELT processes and big data framework
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders
- Cloud Certification such as Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect would be highly desirable
