About The Opportunity

Austal and the Commonwealth of Australia are currently negotiating a landmark Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement (SSA) that will support the Continuous Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Enterprise and the delivery of multiple new defence force shipbuilding projects, such as Landing Craft-Medium and Landing Craft-Heavy for the Australian Army.

Once signed, the SSA will drive significant growth across our industry and workforce, as we deliver both existing and new programs under a long-term partnership. It will also enable the design and construction of vessels at our Henderson shipyard and marks a major step forward in establishing enduring shipbuilding capability within the Henderson Defence Precinct and across Western Australia.

To achieve this, we are building a highly skilled team, to engage with local industry and supply chains, and work on complex, large-scale projects that reflect Austal’s proven capabilities and trusted performance.

Austal Ships is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Quality Assurance (QA) Specialist to join our dedicated Quality Team. In this key role, you’ll be responsible for conducting assurance activities across internal business processes and critical supplier operations, identifying and resolving non-conformances to uphold our high standards.

Your primary mission will be to ensure that Austal Defence’s ISO9001 certified Quality Management System remains compliant with both our Management Services contract and relevant Program Delivery contracts.

What’s Involved

  • Coordinating and conducting audit activities in accordance with the Austal Defence internal audit schedule.
  • Conduct external audits of Subcontractor compliance to contracted Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Provide direct support to business functions to ensure the integration of Austal Defence Quality Management Plan requirements within business Quality processes.
  • Monitoring and analysing Quality data for trends in Quality performance.
  • Identifying and delivering improvement opportunities to the Quality Management System processes aligned to the business Continual Improvement programs.
  • Collaboratively work with stakeholders to ensure documents in the Business Management System meet required standards through conducting Quality Assurance reviews of business process documents.
  • Raise, monitor and support the close out of identified non-conformance with owners to ensure NCRs are managed in accordance with the business NCR procedure.

You’ll Need

  • Diploma or recognised equivalency certification in Quality Assurance, Lean Management, Engineering or Project Management
  • 5+ years experience working in a Quality Assurance role.
  • Previous experience working within a defence manufacturing environment with a demonstrated strong desire to work in Quality Assurance
  • Internal Auditor Training
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing Technical Quality Management System documentation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ISO 9001 and of working within Quality Management systems as they apply to shipbuilding, defence, oil and gas or manufacturing
