Job Description
A LITTLE ABOUT US
When it comes to food experience, me&u helps you always feel like a local. The company’s vision is to bring that feeling to everyone, anywhere - so no matter what neighborhood you live in or visit, you’ll always know the perfect place to go and exactly what to order.
me&u is used by 6000+ bars, pubs, and restaurants to create memorable guest experiences and grow their brands. With 200 staff in five countries, and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, me&u is the consolidation of two leading hospitality technology companies: Mr Yum and me&u, who merged in November 2023.
About The Role
As Director of Engineering, Systems and Operations at me&u, you will play a pivotal leadership role owning our shared infrastructure, custodianship system (our capability and inner source model), security and compliance. Alongside this you will lead our innovation velocity stream (platform simplification) and support the engineering of our CRM solution stream.
Reporting directly to the CTO, and part of the Product Leadership Team, you’ll be responsible for the stability, scalability, and security of the foundation our teams build on. You’ll drive operational excellence that empowers our product engineering streams to deliver at a sustainable pace.
We’re seeking a technical leader who thrives on solving ambiguous platform and operational challenges, can set strategic direction, and is hands-on enough to dive deep when needed – we’re big believers in leaders who are “player coaches”.
You’ll work closely with our engineers, engineering managers, and product managers to ensure we maintain robust systems, enable innovation, and continually raise our bar for engineering excellence, while driving to simplify our platform so we can increase our innovation velocity.
Our teams are made of full-breadth engineers working in every layer of our system, and this role manages engineers which work end to end through all of them (infrastructure, data, back-end, front-end).
What You’ll Do
Technical & Leadership Proficiency
Work with impact and purpose. We’re helping the hospitality and entertainment industries to thrive and me&u is at the forefront of this. Expect collaboration and interesting problems to solve.
Work with great people. Work alongside a supportive, diverse and inclusive team. You’ll have the trust, freedom and support to experiment and not be afraid of failure but to learn from it...and have fun together along the way.
Work that challenges you. We’re growing quickly, and you will too. You’ll have numerous opportunities to embrace discomfort, grow and learn as me&u expands and scales globally.
Work that works for you. We’re a flexible, remote-friendly place with inclusive leave options and day-to-day work times to suit your routine. We prioritise our team’s mental health & overall wellbeing, with access to mental health days and support programs.
Diversity and Inclusion Commitment
We’re committed to growing and empowering an inclusive me&u community. That’s why we actively encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. If you require accessibility assistance at any stage of the process, please let us know.

Our teams are made of full-breadth engineers working in every layer of our system, and this role manages engineers which work end to end through all of them (infrastructure, data, back-end, front-end).
What You’ll Do
- Own and evolve our platform: Wear both the Engineering Management as well as the Product Management hat for our platform, with your customers being both internal (our developers) and external (our customers). In this role you will lead the development, simplification, scaling, and reliability of our cloud infrastructure, dev tooling, and deployment platforms, ensuring they’re robust, cost-effective, and create a great developer experience that leads to faster time to market for our products.
- Steward custodianship and inner source: Champion our capability model and inner source practices, driving best-practice engineering across teams and fostering a culture of shared ownership, knowledge reuse, and platform thinking.
- Lead security & compliance: Set and uphold standards for security and regulatory compliance across all engineering domains, partnering with InfoSec and legal to ensure readiness and ongoing vigilance.
- Oversee CRM solution stream: Guide the evolution of our CRM and data integration capabilities to ensure our customer and operational data platforms are reliable, extensible, and support business growth.
- Team leadership and mentorship: Develop and mentor engineering leads and ICs, building high engagement, trust, technical excellence, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work with Product, Engineering, and Operations leaders to align priorities, clarify requirements, and deliver integrated solutions.
- Technical strategy & architecture: Set technical direction, participate in architectural decisions, and ensure our systems are scalable, secure, and aligned with business needs.
- Incident and risk management: Take ownership of critical incidents, participate in post-mortems, and ensure learnings drive systemic improvement.
- Measure and report: Define key metrics for system reliability, platform adoption, innovation velocity, and regulatory compliance—then measure, report, and iterate.
Technical & Leadership Proficiency
- Deep expertise designing and operating scalable, resilient distributed systems in AWS.
- Solid grounding in distributed systems, microservices, and API design.
- Hands-on with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, observability, and incident response.
- Experience managing containerised, Kubernetes based microservices platform
- Able to roll up your sleeves and jump in in a crisis, help resolve incidents, while building a sustainable, long term capability in the team to resolve similar issues independently of you in the future.
- Strong background in platform engineering, DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure leadership roles, ideally in a B2B SaaS environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams through complex technical and operational change, across any layer of the system (infrastructure, data, back-end, front-end)
- Excellent communication skills, able to bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker able to identify root causes, clarify priorities, and deliver solutions with lasting impact.
- Collaborative leader comfortable driving alignment across multiple functions and geographies.
- Advocates for technical and operational excellence, balancing business value with engineering quality.
- Detail-oriented and accountable for the reliability and security of critical systems.
- Track record implementing inner source or shared capability models in a multi-team engineering organisation would be a distinct advantage.
- Commercial experience with security and compliance frameworks (e.g. SOC2, ISO 27001, PCI-DSS), and a pragmatic approach to risk and controls.
- Experience with hospitality, retail, or payments technology domains.
- Exposure to product-led growth environments or high-scale SaaS.
- Previous experience leading platform simplification or major tech transformation programs.
