About The Role

Join our inclusive Mine Operations team as a Superintendent Production of our newly developed expansion project – Hope Downs 2.

Are you ready to lead from the front and make a real impact? In this pivotal role, you’ll take charge of guiding and developing a high-performing Production team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement through mentoring, coaching, and regular performance feedback. You’ll provide strong, safety-focused leadership in the execution of Load, Haul, and Development activities at site level—ensuring operational excellence and aligning team performance with our short to medium-term goals. This is your opportunity to shape success on the ground and drive meaningful outcomes in a dynamic mining environment.

Reporting to the Mining Manager, your duties will include

  • Follow all Rio Tinto standards, policies, and procedures
  • Act as the site champion for C3 Vehicles and H2 Noise standards
  • Serve as the Nominated Responsible Manager – Mass Transport for the site
  • Hold the statutory appointment of Quarry Manager under WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022, with responsibility for slope safety and compliance with D3 Slopes & Geotech standards
  • Promote a strong safety culture by encouraging awareness, compliance, and prioritisation of safety in all activities
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying and implementing best practice initiatives
  • Oversee daily mine production activities, including haulage, safety, training, scheduling, reporting, and issue resolution
  • Ensure production targets are met through safe and efficient operations
  • Manage training, safety compliance, and team productivity
  • Optimise production performance while managing costs and minimising environmental impact
  • Deliver short- and medium-term plans aligned with business goals
  • Define staffing needs, support recruitment, and identify development opportunities
  • Fulfil risk and assurance responsibilities in line with Rio Tinto’s Risk Management standard

What You’ll Bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will hold some of the following requirements

  • You bring a strong background in safety and people leadership, with a focus on supporting and empowering others
  • You’re confident in coaching, leading change, and making thoughtful, effective decisions
  • You have a solid understanding of drill and blast operations and how they contribute to site performance
  • You’re skilled at tracking, analysing, and reporting on drill and blast activities to support planning, ensure compliance, and drive improvement
  • You actively contribute to a strong safety culture and ensure work aligns with safety standards, processes, and procedures
  • You collaborate effectively to enhance SPCT performance, focusing on safe productivity, continuous improvement, and building team capability
  • You understand budgeting processes, including preparing budgets, analysing variances, and managing cost drivers
  • You hold a current WA ‘C’ Class Manual Driver’s Licence
  • You hold an unrestricted WA Quarry Manager Certificate
  • You’ve completed the Statutory Position Legal Exam – Quarry Manager

This opportunity is offered on a 9-day fortnight FIFO roster from Perth, designed to support balance and flexibility—working 5 days on, 2 days off, followed by 4 days on, 3 days off. It’s a rhythm that helps you stay connected to both your work and what matters most outside of it.

Located 100km north-west of Newman, Hope Downs 1 is a joint venture managed and operated by Rio Tinto, working in conjunction with nearby site Hope Downs 4. Hope Downs 1 provides exceptional career growth and opportunities, and the village provides excellent facilities for its FIFO workers.
