What's the role?
This role exists to develop and deliver off-platform search strategies by optimising news articles, videos, evergreen content and the site for organic search and generative search platforms. The SEO Content Specialist will play a crucial role in crafting the audience strategy and supporting newsrooms to meet audience growth and engagement targets across news.com.au.
As our SEO Content Specialist, you will work closely with the Head of SEO & Emerging Platforms to define the audience strategy for news.com.au and news coverage. Using SEO and editorial best practices, you will guide the editorial team to optimise breaking news articles, videos and in-depth features and play a key role in newsroom planning to attract new audiences. Collaborative and a clear communicator, you will work closely with brand stakeholders to ensure SEO best practices are met, using data-led insights to inform strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities
- Produce and optimise news content for search engines and AI search
- Develop and deliver SEO strategies designed to grow highly engaged audiences to news.com.au, using search and market insights
- Conduct keyword research and competitor analysis to provide content recommendations, including areas of improvement across digital assets
- Work closely with editorial and product teams to ensure articles, videos and other content are optimised for relevant search and off-platform channels (incl. SERPs, Google Discover, OpenAI, YouTube, etc.).
- Report on the effectiveness of SEO content and use data-backed insights to assist in planning for future tentpole news, seasonal events and emerging trends
- Monitor traffic and KPIs on a daily, weekly and monthly cadence, delivering actionable, data-backed insights to teams to action.
- Train journalists, producers and editors in SEO best practices
- Stay on top of SEO industry trends, including AI, and proactively prepare for algorithm changes
- Stay on top of the daily news cycle, delivering optimisation recommendations to the newsroom
- Collaborate with Search / Social / Marketing / Commercial teams to identify areas for SEO traffic growth to improve business KPIs and digital subscriptions.
- You have a track record of writing SEO content and delivering search strategies designed to grow organic audiences, backed by data-led insights.
- You are experienced with using SEO tools (such as SEMRush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, etc.) and are excited to learn more about generative search and emerging platforms.
- You have a genuine interest in current affairs and trending topics.
- You have experience in optimising different types of content for SEO, including news articles, video content and static web pages.
- Previous experience in digital newsrooms is desirable.
- You can take initiative and work collaboratively to integrate with newsrooms.
