The Principal – Energy Demand & Supply Forecasting is a senior technical expert responsible for developing high-quality short-, medium-, and long-term energy forecasts to support Fortescue’s decarbonisation strategy. With a strong focus on electrification and renewable energy integration, the role applies advanced data science techniques and energy market modelling to produce robust, transparent forecasts. Working independently and closely with internal stakeholders, the Principal translates complex datasets into actionable insights that inform energy planning, operational analysis, and scenario modelling.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead forecasting of short, medium, and long-term energy demand and supply profiles, with a focus on renewable generation and electrification.
- Conduct research and modelling of Fortescue’s energy operations
- Develop and maintain forecasting models and guide assumptions to align with internal and market developments.
- Translate technical analysis into strategic insights through reports and presentations for senior stakeholders.
- Present forecasts, risks, and scenario insights in a clear and concise manner to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Mentor and guide team members on best practice forecasting techniques, energy systems modelling, and data interpretation.
- Continuously improve forecasting tools, processes, and visualisation methods.
- Support strategic planning and investment decisions through detailed, evidence-based analysis.
Qualifications and Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Economics or a related field.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in energy forecasting, energy analytics, or power systems modelling.
- Deep understanding of energy markets and power networks (e.g., NEM, global renewable energy trends), including supply-demand dynamics and renewable integration.
- Strong experience with market modelling platforms (e.g. PLEXOS, Aurora, or similar), and statistical forecasting tools (e.g. Python, R, Excel/VBA).
- Demonstrated ability to convert complex models into simple, strategic narratives for senior decision-makers.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience working with large datasets and creating reproducible, automated forecasting workflows.
