About the role
The Officer – Resilience (First Nations) is part of a team at Australian Red Cross that is working on a three-year project to help Western Australians prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters. This project is designed to support specific communities in WA to improve their disaster preparedness and resilience.
Within this project, the Officer – Resilience (First Nations) role supports First Nations communities in Western Australia to be as strong, solid and able to recover as possible when disasters and emergencies happen. The role works with volunteers, staff and communities to:
  • Listen to Indigenous experiences of disasters and emergencies and embed local knowledge and wisdom across our disaster preparedness education
  • Walk alongside First Nations communities to better understand their specific needs in disaster preparedness, and improve our resources to reflect these needs
  • Incorporate Indigenous experiences, voices and contexts into Australian Red Cross emergency preparedness education so that First Nations communities feel safe to engage with our programs
  • Bring people from First Nations communities together in community settings to discuss emergency preparedness.
This role will require some travel to deliver programs to regional areas of the state.
What you will bring
  • You identify as a First Nations person or have significant experience of working with First Nations communities.
  • You have skills in one or more of the following areas: disaster resilience and/or emergency management and/or community development and/or community education.
  • You can help develop and deliver training, workshops, and resources.
  • You know how to connect with First Nations communities and bring people together in a culturally safe and meaningful way.
  • You can work well with volunteers and are willing to guide them on program delivery in First Nations communities.
  • You are good at speaking up about and for First Nations issues and you can help us improve our engagement with First Nations communities.
  • You can gather and record data.
  • You can work with a diverse team and contribute to a collaborative working environment.
  • You can assess, evaluate and solve problems.
  • You can manage your time, set priorities and plan and organise your work.
A current driver's licence and a working with children check (or the ability to obtain one) is a mandatory requirement for this position.
