Job Summary

As the Communities and Social Performance Lead, you will be at the forefront of shaping how our projects engage with people, place, and purpose. Collaborating closely with project delivery teams, you will design and implement community and social performance strategies that align with sector priorities and customer sustainability goals. You will identify key stakeholder entities across the region, including Indigenous communities, and explore opportunities for meaningful engagement and partnerships that support successful project delivery and a positive community legacy. A critical part of your role will be anticipating and addressing social performance requirements—such as license to operate—across sectors and embedding these considerations into early project planning. You’ll also contribute to the delivery of the Bechtel Australia Reconciliation Action Plan, helping to advance our commitments to fairness, diversity, inclusion, trust, and collaboration. This is a leadership role for someone who thrives on building trust, driving impact, and ensuring that social performance is a cornerstone of sustainable development.

Position to be based in Brisbane, with travel required.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work with GBU Sustainable Development team and business development teams to understand sector priorities and goals, customers’ sustainability objectives and ensure expectations are met or exceeded.
  • Identify key stakeholder entities in the region that may affect project success and our reputation, and consider Indigenous and stakeholder engagement and partnering opportunities.
  • Identify and understand social performance requirements (e.g. license to operate) in different sectors and areas and anticipate requirements for prospects under consideration.
  • Coordinate with functional colleagues (Engineering, Procurement, Construction ES&H, etc.) to assess Environmental and Social Impact Assessments and Management Plan and consultation commitments and their integration into early project planning.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of relevant legislation and industry practice and remain aware of trends, developing issues and requirements.
  • Support sustainability input into proposals, and assist in project start-up sustainability plans and deliverables.
  • Support delivery of the Bechtel Australia Reconciliation Action Plan
  • Be guided by our vision, values and commitments including fairness, diversity, inclusion, trust and collaboration.

Education And Experience Requirements

  • Formal qualifications in a relevant discipline such as planning, sustainability, communications/public affairs, community relations or social performance, with 10-15 years experience in a related field.

Required Knowledge And Skills

The following qualifications and experience would be ideal for the position:

  • Experience and understanding of social performance requirements and sustainability concepts as applied to the construction industry, and/or mining.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver project objectives.
  • Experience building effective working relationships with Indigenous peoples and delivering agreed initiatives.
  • Experience with getting to know and understand community concerns and interests and identifying appropriate responses, including understanding function of local governments.
  • Knowledge of national sustainability related requirements and relevant industry sector standards or initiatives for sustainability, and best management practices for minimizing potential social impacts and promoting benefits and innovation during project execution.
  • Strong communication skills, good listener, clear and concise writing ability.
