General Manager, Advice & Approvals

APRA is seeking to appoint a General Manager to lead the Advice & Approvals (A&A) business unit at APRA.
The A&A team provides technical advice and support on the development and interpretation of prudential standards, approval of capital instruments, actuarial and accounting matters, complex entity issues and targeted technical reviews and analysis.
A&A works in close collaboration with all stakeholders to achieve APRA's purpose, and to build APRA's reputation as a professional, responsive and well-integrated regulator. In particular, A&A partners with APRA's teams in supervision and policy and engages with peer regulators and industry.
The role requires significant leadership capability in connecting and collaborating with key stakeholders, in building relevant capability within the team and externally, ensuring operating effectiveness and efficiency and leading change - all in accordance with APRA's objectives.
The team
The GM Advice & Approvals is a member of the APRA Senior Leadership Team and the Policy & Advice Executive Leadership Team, reporting to the Executive Director, Policy & Advice.
The Policy & Advice division is responsible for developing, maintaining, and interpreting APRA's prudential framework and providing advice, support, and approvals with respect to matters across all APRA divisions.
Key accountabilities and outcomes
- People. Lead a team of professionals to deliver high quality outcomes. Foster an inclusive environment that creates a sense of belonging and trust and allows people to actively contribute and reach their full potential.
- Strategy. Set the strategic direction and business plan of the A&A team, consistent with the Policy & Advice Plan and the APRA Corporate Plan.
- Process. Lead dedicated teams of experts to partner with others across the organisation to find solutions to challenging supervision and policy problems faced by APRA.
- Risk. Lead A&A to deliver on its focus areas of improving our partnerships, sharpening our risk-based approach to advice, improving our communications, and enhancing our systems.
- Infrastructure & Capability. Provide expert level technical and procedural advice on interpretation and application of policy and promote adherence to the standards and quality principles that support process consistency.
- Operational Management. Develop and implement systems and procedures that support effective and efficient delivery of the function of the A&A team.
- External. Develop close relationships and networks with peer agencies, external advisors, and industry forums - both locally and internationally, and represent APRA in such environments in a manner that enhances APRA's reputation.
About you

- Adept at leading in the face of uncertainty and facilitates understanding of complex circumstances to gain support and agreement.
- Experience in the financial services sector in a senior leadership capacity, with sound understanding of the principles of prudential regulation and financial sector risks.
- Excellent organisational, prioritisation, analytical and communication skills.
- Relationship building, negotiation and influencing capability at senior level.
- Demonstrated ability to identify strategic issues and develop and implement appropriate solutions.
- Strong personal integrity and an understanding of prudent business practice.
- Ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships with peers, team members and external stakeholders in a professional team environment.
- Professional qualifications in relevant field or equivalent experience, particularly actuarial and/or financial regulation expertise.
