About the Opportunity
The Performance Test Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, executing, and reporting on performance and load testing to validate the scalability, responsiveness, and stability of applications and systems. Reporting to the Manager Test Automation, the role ensures performance testing is integrated into the testing lifecycle and aligned with Agile delivery practices.
This role plays a key part in ensuring that VicRoads' digital systems and infrastructure meet non-functional performance requirements under varying load conditions. The Performance Test Engineer works closely with developers, QA, DevOps, and architecture teams to identify performance bottlenecks, support root cause analysis, and recommend improvements to enhance system behaviour and reliability in production-like scenarios..
- Performance Test Design & Delivery: Lead the development of scalable test automation frameworks across UI, API, and integration layers. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining automated test scripts for regression, smoke, and functional testing, and integrating them into CI pipelines to support fast, reliable deployments.
- Collaboration & Continuous Improvement: Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior automation engineers, promoting best practices and high code quality. It also involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality automation scripting.
About you
You hold a tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, and ideally bring certifications in performance testing or cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
You have proven experience designing and executing a variety of performance tests-including load, stress, soak, and scalability-and are proficient with tools like JMeter, LoadRunner, Gatling, or k6. Your strong analytical skills allow you to monitor and interpret performance metrics across systems, APIs, and infrastructure layers, and you're confident in tuning performance within complex enterprise environments.
You're experienced in working within Agile teams, embedding performance testing into CI/CD pipelines, and using scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell to automate testing workflows. Exposure to cloud-native architectures, containerisation platforms like Docker and Kubernetes, and APM tools such as New Relic or Dynatrace will be highly regarded, as will experience working in highly regulated or mission-critical sectors.
