Trainee Field Officer – APS 3

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is an independent Commonwealth statutory authority responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, radiocommunications, telecommunications and some online content.

This work underpins our vision for a connected, informed and entertained Australia.

About the role

We are offering an exciting opportunity to work in the Field Operations team in our Licensing and Infrastructure Safeguards Branch.

As a trainee field officer, you will work under supervision out in the community with households, businesses, and industry to resolve complex interference issues to radiocommunications services.

You will have an opportunity to:

  • Assist in identifying and resolving interference to ensure that mobile telecommunications networks continue to provide connectivity and access to Triple Zero.
  • Assist members of the public by resolving interference to broadcast television and radio services.
  • Perform measurements of broadcast television, radio and mobile phone signals to ensure industry compliance.

Due to the technical nature of our roles, we are seeking trainees who are currently completing, or have successfully completed in the last 3 years, a Certificate III or Certificate IV in Electronics (or equivalent).

You will receive on-the-job training and work on a wide variety of activities in our Sydney office, and in the field.

As a team member, you will belong to a geographically diverse team. We have staff in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and you’ll have the chance to travel to other parts of Australia.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, questioning and outcomes-focused workplace to achieve goals under the ACMA’s corporate plan.

The roles will be offered at the APS 3 level, in line with the successful candidate’s skills and experience. On completion of the technical trainee program (including mandatory qualifications), trainees will have the opportunity to advance to APS 4 level.

Suitable candidates who are currently completing a technical qualification may elect to undertake the role on a part-time basis, while concurrently completing their qualification. Check out our website for more information about the role of ACMA field officers.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will be a team player who:

  • has excellent communications skills
  • is eager to learn the complexities of working in the field and radiocommunications regulation
  • is flexible and up for a challenge.

You will work in a range of different environments and enjoy the experience of meeting and working with a wide cross-section of the community. We are looking for candidates who can:

  • explain complex technical terms easily
  • think outside the box to solve complex technical problems
  • look for opportunities for improvement
  • be organised and flexible to make changes when the goal shifts
  • enjoy working in a team, sharing information and seeking knowledge to achieve a result.
