DESCRIPTION
AWS Shield is is looking to hire a highly motivated, best-in-class Systems Development Manager for our Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Response Team to lead a team of engineers that will drive the security and stability of our network, while innovating the automation of our operations.The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of technical leadership, success in driving complex issues to resolution, and an “automation first” mindset. The candidate can also demonstrate in-depth knowledge of systems engineering and/or security, and be able to clearly communicate with customers during escalations. They will have regularly demonstrated operational excellence in supporting a large-scale service provider or enterprise environment, including event management. As a technical leader, the candidate will manage complex stakeholder relationships, both technical and leadership. A love for working with new technologies and pushing the envelope on existing technology is essential!

Key job responsibilities
- Drive continuous improvement from disparate data through tooling and automation.
- Identify outcomes, design project plans, and drive the right actions to build the technical acumen on the team
- Collaborate and learn from world-class leaders to meet world-class challenges, every day
- Hire, train, and grow new AWS engineers
- Drive continual improvement in systems operations through tool building and automation
- Drive root cause analyses, in collaboration with software development teams, as well as influencing local development to improve operational performance
- Report on the health of these services at an executive level
- Meet with internal and external customers to develop relationships and drive resilience through automation
- Work in an environment where operational excellence is truly the first priority, and where the degree of automation is above bar

A day in the life
It’s always Day 1 at Amazon. On a typical day, a Shield Response Team Systems Engineer Manager drives the technical direction for the team, manages projects, and works to ensure engineers are set up for success. The most exciting part of this role is seeing the team build and deliver the latest features and software releases for our air-gapped customers.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of relevant hands-on systems engineering and administrative experience in networking, storage, operating systems
- 4+ years experience managing a team responsible for the leading the delivery of large-scale systems focused on managing the infrastructure layer of the technology stack in an Agile environment.
- 3+ years experience as the systems engineering and operations leader operating in a 24x7 environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience building tools and/or services with Bash/shell scripting and Python/Ruby programming
- Leading development life cycle processes and best practices, especially in the areas of deployment automation and monitoring
- Experience with distributed systems at scale
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, Network Security architecture, and core technologies such as IP, TCP, BGP, Firewalls, ACLs, and DNS
- Proven track record of service improvement and optimization in production
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership
