We are currently seeking an experienced and driven Senior Drill and Blast Engineer to join our technical services team at a high-performing open-cut coal operation in Queensland. This is a critical site-based role where you will take ownership of drill and blast planning, execution, and optimisation to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective coal production.

As the Senior D&B Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and mentorship within the drill and blast team, while working collaboratively with Mine Planning, Operations, and Geology departments to ensure designs are executed to plan and aligned with site objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & mentoring: Provide guidance to junior engineers and blast crews, promoting technical excellence and safety-first culture.
  • Blast design and planning: Develop detailed and optimised blast designs using tools such as BlastLogic or ShotPlus, ensuring compatibility with geological and geotechnical conditions.
  • Drill program management: Oversee drill pattern design, drill performance monitoring, and alignment with production schedules.
  • Quality control and blast performance analysis: Monitor outcomes including fragmentation, vibration, and wall control. Use data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Explosives management: Ensure strict compliance with site and legislative standards for the storage, handling, and use of explosives and accessories.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Collaborate with Production, Geology, Survey and Safety teams to ensure seamless execution of daily and long-term mine plans.
  • Compliance and risk management: Maintain best-practice safety systems and ensure compliance with all relevant Queensland mining and explosives legislation.

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
  • MUST have experience in a drill and blast engineer position within open-cut coal operations. Preferable if you have held a senior position.
  • Proficient in blast design and monitoring software (e.g BlastLogic, SHOTPlus).
  • In-depth understanding of coal geology and the challenges of blasting in coal mining environments.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to engage teams across departments.
