2026 Gastroenterology - Hepatology Fellow

12-month Part Time / Fixed Term Position

Hepatology Fellow Position Description

The Role

The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.

The Hepatology Fellow is a one-year programme that will give the candidate wide exposure to general and complex hepatology with clinical and research component, in a large academic Tertiary Hospital. Clinical mix involves HCC, all aetiologies of CLD, specialist exposure to quaternary complex hepatology - Fontan congenital cardiac liver disease, haematology related, porphyria liver disease (with dermatology and genetics). The candidate will received procedural skills training in both fibroscan and shearwave elastography.

Duties Will Include, But Not Limited To

  • Clinical service – The fellow will attend 2-3 supervised Hepatology clinics a week where they will see patients under the supervision of a consultant. They will be expected to maintain follow-up of patients they encounter.
  • Research activities - Fellows will take ownership of at least one high-quality project under appropriate mentorship in clinical or translational research. Fellows will be strongly encouraged to submit their research to a national or international meeting and submit a manuscript for publication to a high-quality journal
  • Clinical trials – The fellow will participate actively in Hepatology Clinical Trials unit, including reviewing the trial patients.
  • Quality control and audit activities – The trainee will have the opportunity to attend the Gastroenterology Department Quality control and Audit meetings and Hepatoma Multidisciplinary Meetings.
  • Learning activities – The fellow will participate and prepare cases for discussion for the weekly hepatoma meeting, and contribute to Department education meetings and journal clubs

Formal Qualifications Required

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
