About the opportunity

Urology/General Surgery

Summary of the role: Urology is a speciality at Werribee Mercy Hospital (WMH) with expanding services and growth in an enlarging population area in Western Melbourne.

In addition, the General Surgery Unit is an accredited training rotation for the RACS General Surgery program and currently has two trainees allocated by General Surgery Australia.

This is a 12 months position, offering 6 months in Urology and 6 months in General Surgery. The role is to assist the urology unit to provide a range of services including emergency assessment and management, pre and post-operative care, attending operating lists and the outpatient management of patients across a range of emergency and elective urology conditions.

For General Surgery, similar work applies. General surgery includes sub-specialities in Acute General Surgery, Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary and Breast/Endocrine.

  • Two fixed term rotational contracts are available - 12 month contract Feb 2026 to Feb 2027
  • Clinical duties will include emergency assessment and management, pre and postoperative care, attending operating lists, attending and running outpatient clinics and managing planning meetings and all audit requirements of the unit.
  • Provide high quality clinical care under the supervision, or with the support, of the consultant general surgery surgeons and participate fully in the activities of the department.
  • For General Surgery, there will be participation in the after-hours (evenings), weekend and nights registrar roster. When on the urology rotation, there are no after hours commitments.
  • The position would be suitable for a doctor looking to gain future entry into Urology training. We may consider a qualified and registerable Australian or International graduate looking for a supported position in urology/general surgery
  • The successful applicant will be employed as per the terms and conditions set out in the current Victorian Public Health Sector (AMA - Victoria) Doctors in Training (Single Interest Employers) Enterprise Agreement
  • Research projects and mentoring toward a training position would be supported as part of this role
  • Educational opportunities are through the University of Notre Dame (Melbourne Campus)

ABOUT YOU:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA)
  • Applicants must be eligible for full registration with AHPRA for positions of up to 12 months from starting date as a surgical registrar.
  • A high standard of written and verbal communication skills.
  • A practical common approach to problem solving & trouble shooting
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
