Legal Officer

We are currently seeking applications for a Legal Officer to join the Fines Enforcement and Recovery Unit at the Department of Treasury & Finance on an ongoing basis.
Remuneration: ASO4 – Salary Range ($76,561 - $80,256 p.a.).
About the opportunity:
As a Legal Officer in the Fines Enforcement and Recovery Unit, you’ll provide well-reasoned legal input informed by advice from internal support partners to support decision-making and operational delivery. Working closely with the Principal, Legal & Governance, a key focus will be helping navigate legal matters and compliance.
Being a newly created role— this is an exciting opportunity for a proactive, action-oriented professional to shape and evolve the position alongside a supportive team. You’ll play a key role in reviewing and responding to matters by preparing documents, interpreting legislation, and managing sensitive issues. Your contributions will directly enhance the integrity and impact of our services, while also helping to refine how we operate and deliver outcomes.

About you
To be successful, you will bring:
- A solid understanding of legal principles, practices, and procedures, with a focus on compliance and regulatory integrity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, practical legal advice and written documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with confidence in handling complex and sensitive legal matters
- A collaborative mindset and a commitment to supporting the team through legal insight, conflict resolution, and clear communication
- Experience delivering advice and documentation on disputes, FOI and complaints, including drafting and reviewing agreements
- The ability to support court proceedings by assisting with case preparation and attending court alongside the Principal, Legal & Governance
- Coordination of recovery actions in partnership with bailiffs and legal advisors to ensure due process
- A proactive approach to working with internal and external partners on client matters and contributing to improved business practices and processes
