About The Organisation

The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland. Our staff enable the delivery of culturally responsive primary health services, focusing on prevention, early intervention, comprehensive care and care coordination including chronic disease management.

About The Position

Are you passionate about creativity, storytelling, and making a real impact? Join our team at Derbarl Yerrigan as a Communications Officer, where your work will directly support the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Western Australia.

In this role, you will assist the Graphics and Social Media Coordinator with managing day-to-day social media content, capturing photography and videography at events, designing promotional material, and contributing to broader communications strategies. You'll help bring our mission and community stories to life through engaging, culturally respectful and visually compelling media.

Key Duties & Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To

  • Work in conjunction with Graphics and Social Media Coordinator on a social media content & strategy ensuring posts are culturally safe and attractive to the Aboriginal audience.
  • Provide design support to the Graphics and Social Media Coordinator on print and digital projects.
  • Attend official and community events as Photographer and manage the Derbarl photo database.
  • Using creative solutions to work with Derbarl’s Clinical Service teams to create supporting materials
  • Engaging with various communication channels and ensuring messaging; print, signage & web content is up-to-date

Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification or working towards it in graphic design or equivalent.

Experience, Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of design software packages including Adobe Creative suite (Adobe, Illustrator and InDesign) and MS Office suite of products.
  • Working knowledge of web-based content management systems.
  • Working knowledge of photography and related equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills – able to communicate with clients and external visitors, managers and staff at all levels and present a professional image.

Desirable

  • Work experience in a social media/graphic design role.
  • Illustration skills with an ability to be creative & innovative.
  • Experience in videography and video content creation.
  • Strong writing & proofreading skills.

Requirements

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander pursuant to Section 50D of the Equal Employment Opportunities Act (Essential).
  • Satisfactory National Police Clearance.
  • Valid Drivers’ License and willingness to travel as required.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
