About the role:
The Operations & Commercial Accounting team oversees US GAAP and IFRS compliance for all Peabody Australia mining and commercial operations. The team ensures timely, accurate financial reporting to support business decisions, while meeting statutory, joint venture, and internal control requirements. This role specifically ensures the integrity of accounting records and provides support to senior accounting leadership.

The Operations & Commercial Accounting team oversees US GAAP and IFRS compliance for all Peabody Australia mining and commercial operations. The team ensures timely, accurate financial reporting to support business decisions, while meeting statutory, joint venture, and internal control requirements. This role specifically ensures the integrity of accounting records and provides support to senior accounting leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with all Peabody safety policies and practices.
- Maintain the financial integrity of general ledgers and accounting records for Peabody Australia operations, ensuring compliance with US GAAP and IFRS.
- Oversee accurate revenue and expense recognition for physical export transactions; prepare and maintain margin reports in collaboration with traders, schedulers, and risk management.
- Assist with month-end mark-to-market accounting for financial instruments, including foreign exchange hedges.
- Apply knowledge of foreign currency transactions, including remeasurement and recognition of gains/losses.
- Support accounting for US export physical trading activities and assist Treasury with weekly cash forecasting.
- Complete monthly financial and management reporting, journal entries, reconciliations, and ensure adherence to deadlines.
- Assist with joint venture accounting, fixed asset register maintenance, and invoicing (intercompany and external).
- Contribute to royalty calculations, take-or-pay assessments, amortisations, government reporting, and accruals.
- Support internal and external audit processes and SEC reporting deliverables.
- Ensure compliance with SOX controls and internal control frameworks.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
- Maintain regular communication with mine site personnel and other departments across Brisbane and US offices.
- May require site visits to ensure accurate application of accounting principles.
- Proactively manage professional development, including technical training.

About you:
- Bachelor’s degree in commerce / accounting
- CA / CPA Qualification or near completion
- Proven experience working as an Accountant in a Professional Services firm or in Commercial accounting roles
- General understanding of US GAAP and IFRS principles
- Ability to manage internal and external relationships through effective verbal and written communication
- Strong excel skills advantageous
- Demonstrated problem solving skills to quickly and effectively resolve issues
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong attention to detail
