About the role
We are currently seeking a commercially astute and highly energised senior commercial lawyer to join us as General Counsel, Auspac, and lead our regional legal team. In this pivotal role, you will partner closely with the Auspac business on complex and high-impact commercial and compliance matters. As a key member of both the Auspac Regional Management Team and Orica’s globally integrated legal function, you will contribute to strategic decision-making and help drive business outcomes across the region. Reporting to the General Counsel and Company Secretary, you will shape legal strategy and help drive long-term commercial success across the Auspac region.
As a strategic legal advisor to the Auspac business, you will provide expert counsel across a broad spectrum of legal areas, including contracts, regulatory compliance, procurement and supply chain, anti-dumping, competition and employment law, and litigation. You will work closely with the General Counsel and Company Secretary, the President – Australia Pacific and Sustainability, and other members of the Auspac Regional Management Team, serving as a trusted advisor and key contributor to initiatives that enable Orica to effectively manage risk and reward in a dynamic and evolving environment.
This role will suit a senior lawyer with a minimum of 15+ years of experience in private practice and in-house gained in Australia and internationally who has strong corporate and commercial legal acumen, a solutions - focused approach, and who can successfully operate in a fast-paced environment.
What you will be doing
- Working closely with the General Counsel and Company Secretary and Auspac Regional Management team on commercial legal matters impacting Orica.
- Leading and managing a team of legal counsels, providing leadership and development.
- Develop strategy for, and management of, litigation and dispute resolution processes.
- Reporting to the Executive Committee and the Board where necessary on topical commercial legal matters.
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide array of legal documents.
- Monitoring (and where appropriate, advising on) relevant laws and regulations.
- Support deployment of the Orica contracts management policies, procedures and systems.
- Provide advice and direction on any competition law matters affecting the Auspac Region.
- Participate in, review and assist with all dumpling applications as required.
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Managing the provision of external legal services.
What you will bring
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Law.
- Qualified to practice Law in Australia.
- A minimum of 15 years post-qualification experience in commercial/projects/competition law legal practice.
- Strong knowledge of anti-bribery and corruption, trade sanctions compliance, and anti-money laundering regulations.
- Proven track record in managing legal teams, external counsel and improving processes.
- Experience and expertise in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to influence at all levels of an organisation.
