About the Role
The Government Relations Manager aligns with relevant internal stakeholders, Telstra's business objectives and corporate strategy, and engages with government stakeholders to support the execution of the Company's strategy.

The role builds and maintains strategic government and stakeholder relationships to:

  • Identify issues of strategic importance to Telstra and advocate Telstra's interests amongst federal and state political and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage political and stakeholder issues (strategy, risks and opportunities) facing the company.
  • Support identification of opportunities and delivery of outcomes that benefit both Telstra and the Government.

What You'll Do

  • Further Telstra's strategy by engaging with government stakeholders on policy opportunities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government stakeholders and connect them with senior executives and relevant internal stakeholders to achieve the outcomes we are both seeking
  • Protect and enhance Telstra's reputation with government stakeholders across all areas of the company's activities
  • Assist in the resolution of escalated customer complaints and electorate issues that are raised via MPs
  • Assist in developing and progressing the GR team's strategy, planning and collaboration


About You
You will be bringing these skills & experiences to be successful in the role:

  • Deep understanding of the processes of federal government in Australia
  • Prior experience in a corporate affairs, government relations or external affairs roles, ideally within a corporate environment or a political office
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development, analysis and advocacy
  • Accomplished communication, stakeholder engagement, issues management and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated strategy and project management skills
  • Strong resiliency, business acumen and attention to detail underpinned by pro-activeness and flexibility
  • A self-starter who is comfortable operating in a small team and an environment of ambiguity and change and demonstrates a singlemindedness in delivery of outcomes


Highly desirable qualification(s):

  • Working knowledge of Australia's telecommunications and/or publicly listed environment
  • Experience in a highly regulated and issues heavy industry with numerous external stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of or experience in a media relations role
