Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone’s reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It’s a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.

Since launching in 2019, Kaluza’s technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.

From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.

Kaluza is currently in an exciting growth phase, undergoing the next phase of our international expansion in Melbourne to further reinforce our capabilities as a globally distributed energy platform.

Our goal is to build a self-sufficient and empowered team here on the ground in Australia. We’re well on our way, but until we get there we still have some reliances on our UK team. Being comfortable working flexibly for a portion of your working week to cover time zones is required.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

You'll be joining the Kaluza Technology community. We’re a large team of both data-led and product focused Software and Production Engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and by ensuring best practices across the board of the community.

You’ll be working on the Kaluza’s Energy Retail platform. This is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform is built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza’s customers.

Here at Kaluza we are 100% committed to providing a reliable platform for our clients. As part of that commitment, our engineering ownership model is “you build it, you own it.” Our engineering teams have a high sense of ownership and support their critical services both in and out of normal working hours. After hours support is assigned according to a paid roster.

What will I be doing?

We believe strongly in shared ownership of both responsibilities and successes across our team. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering our work from the outset. You’ll be exposed to — and help lead on — many aspects of our diverse portfolio, contributing to everything from hands-on engineering to technical decision-making and mentoring.

Our teams build, test, deploy, and support a range of services that manage the customer lifecycle and metering data for the Kaluza platform, using a wide variety of technologies. While you don’t need to have prior experience with all of them, you’ll bring strong engineering fundamentals and a track record of quickly picking up new tools and practices. You’ll typically work with Scala and TypeScript, and interact with technologies including CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Kubernetes, Serverless, DynamoDB or Postgres, AWS, and DataDog.

We follow agile practices and use tools like Miro, Confluence, Jira, and Trello to support collaborative working and delivery. You’ll help drive good practices, shape team ceremonies, and evolve how we work.

As a senior engineer, you’ll be involved in the full development lifecycle: from contributing to technical discovery and architectural design, to rapid prototyping, backlog refinement, development, deployment, and operational monitoring. You’ll help maintain and improve our services’ reliability and performance, and participate in our support rota to triage platform issues and respond to incidents.

You’ll also play an important role in growing our team's capability — mentoring engineers, contributing to cross-team initiatives, and helping define the future direction of our platform.

Some of the challenges you'll help us tackle include:

  • Designing abstractions that reduce complexity across multiple clients and markets
  • Scaling systems to handle millions of data points efficiently and reliably
  • Building extensible services that support configurability and future growth

Kaluza is in an exciting phase of international expansion, and we’re looking for experienced engineers who are excited to shape the next stage of our journey.

Is this the job for me?

Ideally you’ll have/be

  • Genuinely passionate about building products that make a meaningful difference — for millions of customers and the planet
  • A strong collaborator who thrives in team environments and enjoys working closely with others to deliver impactful features
  • Motivated by owning products end-to-end — from shaping the early technical direction through to iterating based on real-world feedback
  • An advocate for test automation, continuous delivery, and modern agile practices — and keen to help others adopt them too
  • Experienced in building scalable, resilient, and observable systems in production environments
  • Curious and growth-oriented — always looking for opportunities to deepen your expertise or explore new areas
  • An experienced hands-on engineer with solid proficiency in TypeScript or Scala (our legacy language of choice) — but we’re more interested in your engineering thinking than your specific tech stack
  • A contributor to a wide range of systems and technologies, bringing breadth as well as depth to your technical work
  • Well-versed in modern engineering practices and principles of continuous delivery
  • Experienced in building and optimising high-performance applications
  • A natural mentor — someone who enjoys sharing knowledge, offering guidance in code reviews and pairing sessions, and helping others grow
