Date: 2 days ago
City: Melbourne, Victoria
Contract type: Full time
At Lyrebird we're looking for a Head of Engineering to join our team.

Role Overview

As Head of Engineering (our most senior technical role), you’ll partner closely with the CEO to set Lyrebird Health’s technical vision while staying in the code and architecture yourself. You’ll grow today’s focused team into a larger, high-performing organisation and transform our single-region product into a secure, global platform clinicians rely on daily. We’re looking for someone who has already led engineering at scale—building products users love and guiding teams well beyond our current stage—yet still enjoys diving deep to solve tough problems.

What You’ll Own

  • Technical strategy & roadmap – Turn business goals into a clear, long-term technology plan.
  • Team & culture – Hire, mentor, and develop an engineering group that ships quality software quickly and sustainably.
  • Architecture & infrastructure – Guide design decisions that keep our GenAI-powered systems secure, performant, and ready for worldwide growth.
  • DevSecOps & reliability – Embed modern pipelines, observability, and “security-by-default” practices across everything we build.
  • Compliance & data privacy – Ensure our platform meets healthcare-grade standards (ISO, SOC 2, HIPAA, regional privacy laws) as we expand.
  • Cross-functional collaboration – Work hand-in-hand with Product, Design, and Clinical teams to turn ideas into delightful clinician experiences.
  • Technology–business bridge – Communicate complex technical topics in plain language to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and scale the organisation – Structure teams, define ways of working, and foster an environment where engineers do their best work.
  • Architect for growth – Oversee system design that handles global adoption while remaining maintainable and cost-effective.
  • Champion quality practices – Promote automated testing, continuous delivery, and code standards that keep velocity high without compromising stability.
  • Uphold security and privacy – Build processes and culture that protect sensitive health data and pass audits confidently.
  • Optimise engineering workflow – Remove friction from idea to production, ensuring fast feedback loops and clear ownership.
  • Mentor future leaders – Grow individual contributors and managers into the next generation of senior technical talent.
  • Represent engineering externally – Join key customer or investor conversations when deep technical credibility is needed.

What We’re Looking For

  • Deep experience owning the design and build of large-scale SaaS products that millions love—you were the technical lead or Head of Engineering, guiding concept-to-launch and shepherding the product into daily, enthusiastic use.
  • Leadership driving high performance with a proven track record of scaling engineering organisations in high-growth SaaS environments, maintaining
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, mentor, and retain world-class talent, creating cultures where engineers consistently do their best work.
  • Familiarity with modern front-end stacks—React, React Query, Next.js, TypeScript—and how they pair with robust backend services.
  • Hands-on expertise running large distributed systems, event pipelines, and message queues in production.
  • Comfort with the unique challenges of AI product development—model lifecycle, evaluation, and safety—especially in regulated domains like healthcare.
  • Successfully implemented and scaled data privacy, security, and global compliance frameworks (HIPAA, ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, regional privacy laws).
  • Ability to balance rapid execution with long-term technical vision, knowing when to cut scope and when to invest in durable architecture.
  • Sharp problem-solving instincts paired with a love of elegant, pragmatic solutions.
  • Bonus: hands-on experience with GenAI agents, LLM pipelines
