Our team

The National Seabed Mapping Section (NSM) is part of the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and the Antarctic Branch (ORCA) in the Place and Communities Division of Geoscience Australia (GA). The section is responsible for producing and managing foundational seabed data products to support government priorities, including the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative (RAPi). The NSM section leads the Offshore Mapping project of RAPi and the collaborative AusSeabed initiative, which aims to improve the coverage, quality, accessibility and usability of seabed bathymetry mapping products in the Australian region through coordination, collaboration, and innovation.


The role

The marine geoscientist will apply marine geoscience and data management expertise to seabed mapping activities that informs sustainable management of Australia’s marine jurisdiction.


In this role you will:


  • Apply marine geoscience specialist knowledge and expertise to create integrated bathymetric-topographic surfaces and assess, process, and manage source data.
  • Work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver outputs that meet end-user needs.
  • Apply and contribute to developing standard operating procedures for seabed data analysis and integration into foundation geospatial data products.
  • Contribute as a proactive and inclusive member of the section, including providing peer review of marine geoscience work by colleagues and setting priorities and workplans in your area of expertise.


To be successful in the role you will:

  • Apply your expertise and technical knowledge to support the work of the ORCA Branch and encourage others to draw upon your knowledge.
  • Proactively identify risks and issues around project delivery and provide solutions to mitigate them while maintaining effective performance.
  • Work independently and take personal responsibility for accurate completion of work within agreed timeframes and quality requirements; take the initiative to progress work when required.
  • Build and sustain relationships and liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including across government.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and continue to develop your expertise and skills.
  • Communicate clearly and succinctly, both orally and in writing.
  • Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional way.


Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in marine geoscience (e.g. bathymetry, hydrography, geomorphology or equivalent).
  • Experience in bathymetric processing software (e.g. Caris HIPS & SIPS or QPS Qimera) and/or GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS) or similar.
  • Knowledge of spatial data analysis techniques, scripting and automation (e.g. Python) is highly desirable.
