Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia


The Veterinary Surgeons Board of South Australia (VSBSA) is an independent statutory authority which regulates the provision of veterinary treatment to protect the public interest and animal health, safety and welfare. The VSBSA works to ensure those in the profession achieve and maintain high professional standards of competence and conduct in their provision of veterinary treatment.


This newly created role reports to and supports the Registrar in ensuring compliance with the Veterinary Practice Act and the implementation and administration of the Veterinary Services Act 2023. Key responsibilities will include:


  • supporting the Registrar with development and implementation of policies and procedures in line with the new Act;
  • support the Registrar with determining applications for registration of veterinarians and premises, monitoring of compliance, conditions and maintaining registers;
  • supporting the Registrar to manage and assess notifications, investigations and proceedings for veterinarians and premises including preparing correspondence and reports for the Board, Tribunal or other bodies;
  • supporting the Registrar to provide information and advice to veterinarians and the public about relevant legislation, codes of conduct, professional standards and other standards and guidelines prepared or endorsed by the Board;
  • assisting in the facilitation of Board meetings including preparing or coordinating agendas, papers and minutes and ensuring accurate records of all Board and Committee meetings are maintained;
  • assisting with the preparation of the Board’s annual report and arranging for submission to the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development;
  • developing and maintaining strong working relationships with Board members, the veterinary profession, government agencies including Crown, the public and other key stakeholders.


Given the focus of the role will mainly encompass dealing with the Act and Regulations, applications are encouraged from professionals with a legal (or related) qualification, together with, demonstrated experience reporting to a Board including secretariat, governance and reporting accountabilities. Excellent stakeholder relationship building skills and high level written and verbal communication skills and a working knowledge of statutory processes and the administration of legislation will be critical for success. Proficiency in legal interpretation and risk analysis is essential.


The position is offered on a part time basis of 3 days per week with the potential for more hours over busy periods.
