About The Role
We are seeking a Lawyer (1–4 years PAE) to join our rapidly growing Sydney Environment & Planning team. As part of our nationally recognised and market leading Real Estate & Projects practice, you'll work across a mix of litigation, advisory and transactional matters.
Our clients include leading developers, institutional landowners, and government bodies at local, State and Commonwealth levels.
You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners dedicated to mentoring and supporting young lawyers and work on a wide variety of matters ranging from compulsory acquisition, planning, pollution, contaminated land, administrative law, heritage and much more.
The team has active litigation in Classes 1, 3, 4 & 5 of the Land and Environment Court of NSW, as well as the District Court of NSW and Magistrates Court of Victoria, providing a wide range of litigation experience in development appeals, compensation claims, judicial review, and environmental crime.
There is also an opportunity to expand your knowledge to other jurisdictions by working on matters originating in our Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra offices.
Responsibilities
- Advising on issues under a broad range of environment and planning legislation, including the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 and the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991.
- Day to day conduct of litigation, primarily in the Land and Environment Court of NSW, including managing teams of experts, liaising with client and barristers and appearing at directions hearings and other interlocutory matters.
- Advising on development applications and compliance with conditions.
- Advising on and acting in relation to enforcement orders, prosecutions, any associated regulatory activity.
- Reviewing and drafting contractual documents such as biodiversity offset agreements and planning agreements.
- Advising on planning and contamination risk as part of a property or commercial transactions.
- Undertaking research in relation to a range of topics.
- Suitable applicants will be 1-4 years PAE and hold a current practising certificate for NSW
- Training and experience gained in a mid or top tier law firm or in-house (private or government) focussing on environment & planning law
- Proven decision making and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated time management and organisational skills
- An ability to influence and manage conflict with a diplomatic and consultative approach
- Demonstrate the ability to build strong working relationships
- Strong team collaboration skills with an ability to lead by example
- A passion for providing a high level of customer service
- Strong attention to detail
- A desire to learn and develop new skills
