Due to growth in our business Transgrid is currently recruiting for a highly motivated Payroll Team Leader to join our team in Ultimo. The role plays a critical leadership role within the Payroll team, ensuring the accurate, compliant, and efficient processing of payroll for approximately 2,000 (and growing) colleagues. The Payroll Team Leader ensures processes and checks are designed and implemented to maintain compliance with relevant legislation, employment contracts, enterprise agreements, and payroll policies and procedures. This is a hands-on role that requires a strong technical understanding of Australian payroll legislation, enterprise bargaining agreements (EBA), and payroll systems, specifically SAP Employee Central Payroll (SAP ECP).

The Payroll Team Leader is responsible for managing a team of four Payroll Officers and supports the Payroll Manager as a key liaison between Payroll, People and Culture, and Finance. Additionally the role will provide advice to the payroll team and business relating to payroll queries and will act as back-up to the Payroll Manager in their absence.


About You


To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess some or all of the following:


  • 5+ years' experience in a Payroll Team Leader (or equivalent) role.
  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in accounting or business, or in a related discipline; or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience leading and coordinating a payroll function within a medium to large scale organisation.
  • Knowledge and experience in payroll and entitlement functions to perform the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge and experience in SAP Employee Central Payroll or a similar enterprise-level payroll platform (preferred but not essential).
  • Relevant knowledge of legislation, and familiarisation of Conditions of Employment, policies and procedures relating to payroll.
  • Proven experience managing and applying Enterprise Bargaining Agreements (EBAs) within payroll.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, research and analyse data to identify causes and develop sound solutions.
  • Ability to effectively inform, influence, resolve conflict and negotiate with employees at all levels.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office Suite experience (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint) with advanced Excel preferred but not essential.
  • Hands-on, proactive, and solution-oriented approach.
  • Highly organised with strong time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Sound understanding of the functionality of the payroll system.
  • Team-oriented leader who thrives on coaching and supporting others.
  • Resilient under pressure with the ability to manage tight deadlines and complex tasks.
  • Experience in providing accurate and timely advice and information in relation to payroll queries.
  • Strong attention to detail, high level of numerical accuracy, and commitment to data integrity.
  • Ability to build strong relationships across P&C, Finance, and other corporate functions.
  • Developed communication skills, both written and verbally, with the ability to listen and assess the needs of customers and liaise with a wide range of people, both internal and external to the organisation.
  • Deal with issues confidentially and sensitively when applying established procedures and be committed to continual professional and personal development.
