Policy Analysts
We are recruiting for two Policy Analysts (APS level 6) in our Policy and Advocacy Team to undertake research and contribute to the development of evidence-based policy proposals across a broad range of complex issues. For these roles, we are seeking collaborative and highly motivated individuals who are intellectually curious and enjoy solving complex problems across a broad range of policy issues affecting small and family businesses.

An exciting position for an experienced Data Analyst to join the Economics and Data Analytics team with an opportunity to work as a part of the team and the wider Office, both collaboratively and independently. About The Roles:
Policy Analysts
We are recruiting for two Policy Analysts (APS level 6) in our Policy and Advocacy Team to undertake research and contribute to the development of evidence-based policy proposals across a broad range of complex issues. For these roles, we are seeking collaborative and highly motivated individuals who are intellectually curious and enjoy solving complex problems across a broad range of policy issues affecting small and family businesses.
Key duties
- Contribute to the development of reports, briefs, submissions and other correspondence on matters impacting small businesses
- Monitor current and emerging policy issues affecting small businesses
- Undertake research and development of project timelines for strategic priorities
- Represent the ASBFEO at external events and stakeholder meetings
- Lead both internal and external stakeholder consultations
- Support the development of junior analysts by providing guidance on research and analysis techniques
- Ability to interpret and apply legislation to identify and analyse policy issues and consult with stakeholders to inform evidence-based policy proposals
- Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders
- Ability to work flexibly and responsively on multiple tasks concurrently
- Team-orientated, coupled with personal drive and integrity
- Ability to exercise judgment, identifying risks and uncertainties and accounting for these in planning and prioritising tasks
- Demonstrate initiative and able to undertake work under limited direction

The Economics And Data Analytics Team Is Responsible For:
- Conducting economic research and analysis that is focused on evidence-based policy
- Assembling authoritative small and family business data and provide impactful insights
- Maintaining and improving our information systems and data capture, providing a clearing house for small and family business data and robust internal and external reporting
- Leading, coordinating and collaborating on national research in the sector and providing timely and value-added reporting
- Consulting and collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders, including Commonwealth government departments and agencies, state and territory agencies, private enterprises, peak industry bodies and individuals on small business and family enterprise matters
- Representing the Office and engaging with a broad range of small businesses, family enterprises, representative organisations and government agencies
- Collecting and analysing data using robust analytical methodology to inform work priorities and executive decision making, as well as small business engagement
- Collaborating with related agencies and external parties to source, secure access and integrate data sets
- Exploring relationships in data sets to produce new insights, including our internal data that can provide early warnings of systemic and other issues
- Communicating and translating complex technical information simply and effectively to technical and non-technical audiences
- Leading the data management and governance activities of the office’s internal data
- Advising on best practice information and data governance to support the compilation of material to ensure compliance with reporting obligations
- Working effectively within a small team and proactively across the office, communicating with colleagues and liaising with a broad range of stakeholders
- Preparing reports for the executive and other stakeholders
- Opportunity to assist with analysis of integrated data in the ABS DataLab environment
- Strong reporting, analysis and collaboration skills
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills with an understanding of data governance
- Ability to take initiative to complete tasks to a high level and work cooperatively as a member of a small team
- Attention to detail with an understanding of reporting and data visualisation tools
- Ability to learn and quickly apply new technology and analytical tools
- Familiarity with data analysis techniques
- Team-orientated, having energy and determination to succeed
