DFAT operates at the intersection of economics and international policymaking, and we are looking for individuals who can interpret and apply economic concepts to support DFAT’s policy agenda, contribute to development program designs, and assist with program implementation.


Credible, timely and accurate economic and data analysis is essential to the development of evidence-based public policy. Ministers and the DFAT Executive depend on the department’s Economists to provide them with timely and high-quality qualitative and quantitative analysis to support policy development and international advocacy.


DFAT are looking for passionate economists to provide economic analysis and advice on the implications of international economic and political developments for Australia’s trade and investment, development, and foreign policy interests. This analysis and advice is critical to DFAT’s development and implementation of its policy agenda.


As an APS6 Economist in the department you will lead the analysis of data to provide crucial advice on global, regional, and bilateral economic issues shaping Australia's trade, investment, development, and foreign policy. As well as offering technical and policy support across various programs, leveraging DFAT's international networks to influence domestic economic agendas and international engagements. Additionally, you will advocate and represent DFAT in inter-agency and cross-agency meetings with both international and domestic partners.
