Senior Cloud Data Engineer – Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

We are seeking a results-oriented Senior Cloud Data Engineer (Google Cloud Platform) to join a high-performing team delivering scalable and robust data engineering solutions. This is an opportunity to work in a federally aligned data program, supporting enterprise-scale data infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on data governance, pipelines, and agile delivery. You will be responsible for leading data engineering efforts, mentoring others, and shaping the future of our cloud-native data platforms.

Key Duties:

• Translate complex functional and technical requirements into detailed technical designs and engineering solutions.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable data pipelines, ELT/ETL frameworks, and data storage solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Lead and mentor a team of data engineers and developers, driving excellence and continuous improvement in delivery.
• Build and maintain DataOps automation and CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure.
• Deliver Data Management artefacts including Data Strategies, Business Glossaries, Data Quality Rules, and Governance Principles.
• Present technical data artefacts to stakeholders and contribute to showcases and executive briefings.
• Support concurrent project releases within hybrid delivery environments using Agile, SAFe, and ITIL frameworks.
• Ensure performance tuning, reliability, and security of data products across cloud environments.
• Contribute to and enforce data governance and security compliance policies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (Executives, Product, Design, Technical) to understand data-related business requirements.
• Manage the full lifecycle of cloud-native data engineering projects.
• Monitor and optimize data workflows for cost efficiency, performance, and resilience.
• Ensure data quality and integrity through validation, governance, and observability practices.
• Design and maintain high-performance BigQuery datasets, integrate with services like Dataflow, Cloud Storage, and Dataprep.

Essential Experience:

• Proven experience in data engineering on Google Cloud Platform, including BigQuery, Dataflow, Dataprep, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Composer.
• Strong background in designing and implementing ELT/ETL pipelines, data lakes, and data warehousing solutions.
• Hands-on expertise in building scalable CI/CD pipelines and automating infrastructure through DataOps methodologies.
• Solid experience working in hybrid delivery environments – Agile, SAFe, ITIL, or Waterfall.
• Track record of producing and managing enterprise data artefacts and data management strategies.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and provide technical leadership.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly in a large, complex environment.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience in data governance, security compliance, and metadata management.
• Familiarity with scripting and automation tools (e.g., Python, Terraform, Bash).
• Experience in multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environments, particularly with cross-platform data flows.
• Exposure to public sector or large enterprise data transformation programs.
• Knowledge of MDM, business intelligence reporting (e.g., Looker, Tableau), and advanced analytics tools.

Location:

• Canberra (ACT) or Sydney (NSW) – Flexible hybrid arrangements available
• Baseline or higher security clearance is advantageous
