We are seeking an experienced and confident leader who can work as part of a collaborative executive team to deliver the administration of Plant Breeder's Rights and Oppositions in support of the strategic objectives outlined in our Corporate Plan.


This is an exciting time for the agency as we bring together our maturing data capability with our expertise in development and deployment of AI solutions to drive efficiency and ensure our data is utilised as a national asset. We are seeking to realise the benefits of our previous investments in these areas to lean into innovation with the goal of delivering efficient and financially sustainable services for our customers and the government. Maintaining high quality and timely IP rights, in accordance with our Performance Framework is a critical expectation of the government and our customers.


Key responsibilities for this role include:


  • Administration of the PBR system in accordance with the Plant Breeder’s Rights Act 1994.
  • Chair the PBR consultative group to ensure stakeholder input to administration of the PBR system.
  • Develop relationships with appropriate stakeholders in the IP rights system to support delivery of IP Australia’s strategic objectives.
  • Administration of the Oppositions and Hearing processes for all IP rights.
  • Close collaboration with other IP Australia executive, particularly the Commissioner of Patents, Registrar of Trade Marks and the Registrar of Designs in the effective and efficient delivery of Oppositions and Hearing services across all rights, and the delivery of quality and practice support to patent examination.
  • Legislative compliance in the delivery of PBR and Oppositions administration.
  • Manage the Group’s budget, optimising resource allocation and pursuing cost-effective solutions
  • Build a strong talent pipeline to enable execution, exploration and experimentation
  • Display and encourage others to follow the Secretaries’ Charter of Leadership Behaviours, including the DRIVE (be Dynamic, be Respectful, have Integrity, Value others, Empower people) behaviours
  • Leadership of approximately 51 staff and contractors – working from Canberra, Melbourne and remotely.
