Join Our New ABW Informatics Team – Help Strengthen Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) in WA.


The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is seeking passionate, qualified, and experienced professionals to join a newly established ABW Informatics Team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in supporting and enhancing the information systems that underpin animal biosecurity and welfare in Western Australia.


You will be part of a dynamic team responsible for maintaining, developing, and integrating key biosecurity information management systems used by the ABW Directorate. These systems support vital biosecurity functions including livestock traceability, disease surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, and trade certification.


Our core systems include (but are not limited to):

  • National Livestock Identification System (NLIS)
  • Livestock Movement System
  • Livestock Ownership Registration System
  • MAX (Emergency Animal Disease Case Management)
  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Biosecurity Intelligence Platform


These platforms deliver critical intelligence on agricultural land holdings, livestock ownership and movements, and biosecurity activity across the state.


Why This Role Matters


Your work will directly support WA’s ability to detect, manage, and respond to biosecurity incidents, emergency animal diseases, and maintain international trade. The data and systems you help manage are essential to biosecurity early warning systems, biosecurity compliance, and effective policy development.


As part of the ABW Informatics Team, you will:

  • Contribute to system improvements and redevelopment projects
  • Ensure continuity and integration of existing systems
  • Support business needs through data analysis and reporting
  • Help transition to modern platforms and technologies
  • Work in collaboration with DPIRD’s Information Services team to ensure our applications are reliable, scalable, and fit-for-purpose


This role offers the opportunity to influence how animal biosecurity data is captured, analysed, and used—driving better decision-making and enhancing WA’s preparedness and response to emerging threats.


The ABW Systems Team will include the following positions

  • Level 7 Project Manager (permanent position)- the Team Lead who will manage the delivery of Animal Biosecurity and Welfare’s biosecurity information management
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting information management applications and systems within a large organisation
  • Level 6 Senior Project Officer (fixed term position of 2 years) – who will coordinate and conduct research and analysis of systems data to provide animal biosecurity intelligence.
  • Level 7 Information and Data Manager (fixed term position of 18 months) – who will lead the development and implementation of strategies that manage systems, policies and data quality to meet business needs and ensure compliance with all legislative requirements
  • Level 6 Senior Applications Officer (fixed term position of 18 months) - who will lead and manage the provision of an effective, efficient and timely Application Support Services for ABW systems


We are looking for individuals with:

  • Leading and managing the delivery of information systems projects.
  • Coordinating and conducting research and analysis of systems data to provide intelligence.
  • Implementation polices, procedure, and staff training of ensure system data quality and compliance.
  • Leading and providing application support services.
  • Experience with coding and data analysis software, such as Python, R, SQL, and Power BI whilst not essential would be advantageous for the level 6 positions


While experience in agriculture is an advantage, we encourage applications from professionals with a proven ability to adapt to new business environments and systems.
