About The Role

In this role, you will provide a customer-focused service to ensure that buildings and other structures are built and maintained in accordance with the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2018. It will involve the review and investigation of complaints relating to potential breaches of the legislation and where required, participate in joint investigations with other enforcement authorities / agencies. This position will also be responsible for providing advice and support to clients.

Work type: Permanent full-time

Classification: Band 5 Commencing at $78,646 pa plus super

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the review and investigation of complaints relating to potential breaches to the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2018 and carry out appropriate enforcement action under Part 8 of the Act.
  • Carry out site inspections and audits of existing buildings and structures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, prepare reports and correspondence as required.
  • Undertake joint investigations with staff from other Council Departments (where appropriate), prepare relevant documentation and institute legal proceedings as directed in relation to breaches within the area of responsibility.
  • Provide service excellence through establishing positive communications with the general public by educating and promoting the need for compliance with the various statutes, legislation and local laws.
  • Provide clients with a professional and up-to-date advisory service and assist the public with enquiries.
  • Assist with the administration of the provisions of all applicable legislation, Acts, Regulations and Local Laws maintaining appropriate administrative and information-keeping systems.
  • Assist with other key building surveying functions from time to time as directed by the Municipal Building Surveyor.
  • Participation in an after-hours on call emergency roster.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have knowledge of Government policies and practices and awareness of current trends and issues. You will also have proficient theoretical and practical knowledge and ability to interpret building and associated legislation and practices.

Essential Experience:

  • A degree or tertiary qualifications in Building Surveying.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.
  • Preferred candidates will be required to undergo a National Police Check as part of the recruitment process (funded by the City).
