Job Description

How will I help?

The Chief Engineer plays an important role to develop, manage and provide technical expertise for an engineering domain in line with Westpac’s IT principles to ensure that the Westpac Group’s business objectives are met. Supports Property (inc. Physical Security), Procurement, Resilience, Corporate Affairs and Community (PPR & CAC) business units.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Provide organisational leadership and guidelines to promote the development and exploitation of specialist knowledge in the organisation.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of specific specialisations, providing expert advice regarding the domain. Can supervise and provide consulting activities and make recommendations and advise team members based on industry best practices and personal experience.
  • Execute specialised tasks and set the organisation’s policy for the design, development and testing of technical capabilities aligned to the technical specialisation, ensuring the business requirements are met and industry best practices are adopted.
  • Set strategies for effective use of the technical specialisation taking into account the complex interrelations between hardware/software.
  • Business Unit level expert in a particular area or go-to person for solving problems in their domain expertise for all Technology.
  • Set team-based standards for tools, techniques and methods, including security guidelines, alignment to enterprise architecture, adoption of platforms and systems and ensure that they are applied effectively.
  • Influence industry-based models for the development of new technology applications.
  • Evaluate risks to the integrity of solutions including availability, performance, servicing and compliance of the business and technology services impacted.
  • Recommend and set CI/CD and DevOps practices and standards across the team that are endorsed by Group Technology and ensure maximum leverage of existing platform services.

What do I need?

Essential:

  • Extensive experience with software development and applications design, understanding industry best practices.
  • Extensive experience in a large-scale technology environments across a wide variety of platforms.
  • Proven results in senior level functions within the IT Industry.
  • Excellent ability to quickly understand the functions and capabilities of new technology.
  • A solid understanding of delivering technology in a financial services environment.
  • Leads Agile Values and Principles. Participating in Lines of Business ceremonies, leading the Technology solution.
  • Experience with Agile toolsets: JIRA, Confluence and DevOps tools.

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Previous property, procurement and resilience experience.
  • Multiple vendor certifications.
  • People leadership experience.
  • Extensive financial services industry experience is desirable.
