What's the role?

News Corporation Australia is seeking an experienced editorial leader to join its Network News team overseeing and guiding our team of nationally focussed reporters.

In this role, you will be responsible for setting the editorial agenda and ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the newsroom.

This position requires a strategic thinker with excellent organisational and communication skills, a deep understanding of the Australian news cycle, and a passion for producing high-impact journalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Newsroom: Direct and manage a team of reporters, editors, and journalists to ensure timely, accurate, and high-quality reporting.
  • Set the Editorial Agenda: Work closely with the Editor and Deputy Editor to define and shape the daily and long-term editorial direction, ensuring content aligns with the newspaper’s vision and objectives.
  • Manage News Coverage: Oversee coverage of breaking news, feature stories, and investigative reporting, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive news agenda.
  • Coordinate Reporting Efforts: Ensure seamless collaboration between reporters, editors, photographers, and other departments to meet deadlines and produce engaging, informative content.
  • Foster a Collaborative Environment: Cultivate a positive and productive newsroom culture, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to reporters and staff at all levels.
  • Monitor Industry Trends: Stay informed on media industry and audience growth developments, competitor activities, and audience interests to keep the newspaper at the forefront of relevant and impactful news coverage.
  • Reporting to Leadership: Provide regular updates to senior editorial leadership, offering insights on news priorities, story developments, and operational efficiency.

Who are you?

  • Proven experience in a senior editorial or leadership role within a newsroom, with at least 5 years of experience in journalism.
  • Strong editorial judgment and a deep understanding of news cycles, media trends, and audience engagement.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide diverse teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both editorial staff and senior management.
  • A solid track record of setting and executing editorial strategy across multiple platforms (print, digital, social media).
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • A commitment to ethical journalism and maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and fairness.
