The opportunity

Downer’s Energy & Utilities (E&U) team delivers power systems projects nationally, predominately in the transmission and renewable energy sector for both utility and private developers and is seeking an enthusiastic, driven, and highly experienced Planning Manager who is looking to play a part in Australia’s energy transition and decarbonisation efforts.

This is a full-time permanent role reporting into the Executive General Manager – Commercial, Performance, & Risk and will have responsibility for leading a growing team of approximately 15 direct reports. We are open to considering candidates who are based in either Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane or Melbourne.

What You’ll Do

The E&U Planning Manager will lead the planning and scheduling function to deliver of the Planning & Scheduling services on all nominated execution phase (live) capital projects and tenders ensuring the quality and production of planning outputs is in accordance with The Downer Standard (TDS) and relevant E&U Standards, Policies and Processes.

The planning & scheduling team operates in a functional matrix organisational structure working across all sectors covered by Energy & Utilities, e.g. transmission lines, substations, battery systems, water treatment plants, gas & water networks, power station and process plant shutdowns and overhauls, in pursuit of best practice and improved project delivery performance. You will be responsible for growing and upskilling the planning and scheduling team to ensure a high quality of planning and scheduling activity in a close working relationship with broader project control functions and operational leads.

You will monitor and input into the E&U Portfolio resource plan to allocate the right person at the right time to continually improve capacity and capability of planning resources including the effective management and coordination of consultant planning resources where required.

What We’re Looking For

  • Prior experience in a functional matrix project support structure
  • Prior experience leading a team of technical professionals in the delivery of utilities, energy, power and processing sectors
  • 10 to 15 + years in a senior planning role on projects working for various industry sectors preferably or a senior specialist for an industry sector
  • Proficient planning software skills including Primavera P6 (essential) and MS Project.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of CPM scheduling concepts and delay analysis techniques
  • Good commercial acumen and a sound understanding of risk management
  • High levels of verbal and written communications skills.
  • Power BI knowledge and working experience.
  • Available to visit project site locations including interstate travel when required.
  • High quality administrative skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
