Lighting Designers — Lightmatters
Greater Sydney | Full-time and part-time opportunities | On-site
Help shape the next chapter of an independent lighting design studio, building on more than 40 years of Haron Robson experience.
Lightmatters is seeking senior and junior lighting designers to work with Glen Haron, co-founder of Haron Robson, on thoughtful, creative and technically sound lighting solutions.
We welcome applications from experienced designers ready to lead projects and support others, as well as emerging designers looking to build their skills. Full-time and part-time arrangements are available, with responsibilities tailored to experience and agreed working hours.
Following the transfer of Haron Robson’s engineering business and team to Bestec in July 2026, Glen is developing the specialist lighting practice through Lightmatters. These roles offer the opportunity to contribute across the design process, work with clients and help shape the studio’s future.
Our background and the business transition
Haron Robson has a long history of combining design thinking with practical technical advice across commercial, hospitality, leisure, residential and public environments.
Its engineering business now operates within Bestec NSW as Haron Robson — powered by Bestec, connecting established client relationships and experience with Bestec’s broader building services capabilities.
Lightmatters was retained as an independent specialist lighting business.
It works with architects, interior designers, owners, developers and engineering consultants, including Bestec, through separately defined lighting design commissions.
The businesses have complementary roles: Lightmatters provides specialist lighting advice, design and associated documentation; Bestec provides engineering and broader building services delivery.
These positions focus on Lightmatters: developing a lighting studio that combines the experience and relationships built through Haron Robson with lighting ideas, design documentation and a clear commitment to independent advice.
About Lightmatters
We help clients understand what lighting needs to achieve before deciding which products to use.
Our approach begins with people, activities, architecture and atmosphere. We develop the lighting hierarchy, consider daylight and controls, test performance and translate the design into clear, buildable documentation.
We value visual comfort, appropriate illumination, energy efficiency, maintainability and commercial practicality. Luminaire selection is an iterative part of that process, informed by design intent, calculations, budget, availability and the way a space will be operated.
Our advice is independent and based on the needs of the project. We welcome curiosity, informed questioning and a willingness to explore new approaches while remaining accountable for practical outcomes.
The opportunities
You will work with Glen Haron and collaborate with clients, architects, interior designers, engineers and suppliers across commercial, hospitality, leisure, public and residential projects.
The work spans concept development, technical design, documentation and site involvement. Responsibilities will reflect your experience, capability and working arrangements.
Senior Lighting Designer
This role suits an experienced designer who can develop and communicate design intent, lead projects and coordinate delivery with clients and the wider design team.
Your responsibilities will include
- Client, Team & Fee development
- Establishing project briefs, client objectives, functional requirements and the intended character of each space.
- Leading lighting concepts, design development, technical assessment and documentation.
- Managing client relationships, coordination, project priorities, fees and delivery programmes.
- Reviewing calculations, luminaire selections, controls strategies and documentation for quality and consistency.
- Guiding junior designers and contributing to the studio’s design resources and working methods.
- Leading relevant site reviews, mock-ups, aiming and commissioning reviews.
- Contributing to proposals, presentations and the development of the practice.
You should have demonstrated architectural lighting design experience, sound technical judgement and the ability to carry projects from briefing through to completion. Experience in hospitality and leisure projects would be particularly useful.
Junior / Lighting Designer
This role suits an emerging designer, recent graduate or someone with relevant design or technical experience who wants to develop a career in architectural lighting.
Working with guidance and review, your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with research, concept development and visual presentations.
- Preparing lighting layouts, calculations, schedules and supporting documentation.
- Investigating luminaires, optics, accessories and controls against project requirements.
- Coordinating design information with architectural, interior and services drawings.
- Supporting sample reviews, mock-ups, site inspections and project records.
- Developing your understanding of lighting performance, standards, controls and practical installation requirements.
We are looking for curiosity, attention to detail, clear communication and a willingness to learn. Your portfolio may include academic, personal or professional work, provided your contribution is clearly identified.
Our design work
Across both levels, the studio’s work includes:
- Developing lighting concepts, hierarchies, layouts and control strategies that respond to architecture and interior design.
- Assessing illumination, uniformity, glare, beam distribution and relevant compliance requirements.
- Evaluating luminaires and controls against performance, appearance, budget and maintenance needs.
- Producing coordinated drawings, schedules, specifications, reports and presentations.
- Refining designs as project requirements, budgets and technical information develop.
- Coordinating lighting with ceilings, joinery, finishes, services and architectural details.
- Reviewing proposed substitutions against the documented design intent.
- Assisting with aiming, scene setting and commissioning reviews alongside installers and control specialists.
We favour coherent lighting families, sensible product rationalisation and adaptable solutions that simplify installation, sourcing and future maintenance.
What you will bring
We value design judgement, technical curiosity and the ability to turn ideas into clear project information. The depth of experience expected will depend on the position.
Relevant skills and attributes include:
- An understanding of how light interacts with materials, colour, form and the experience of a space.
- Knowledge of, or a willingness to develop skills in, photometry, optics, glare, colour quality and dimming.
- Experience with relevant drawing and documentation software, with CAD capability and BIM experience valued.
- Experience with lighting calculation software such as DIALux or Relux, or a willingness to learn for junior applicants.
- Familiarity with lighting controls, including DALI, scene setting and coordination with AV or building control systems.
- Clear visual, written and verbal communication.
- Knowledge appropriate to your experience of relevant Australian standards, NCC lighting and energy efficiency requirements.
- The ability to organise your work, coordinate with others and meet agreed deadlines.
- A relevant qualification in lighting design, architecture, interior design, electrical engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
Senior applicants should demonstrate independent project delivery client management and technical leadership. Junior applicants should demonstrate a sound foundation, initiative and potential to develop.
Full-time and part-time arrangements
We welcome applicants seeking either full-time or part-time work. Please state your preferred working days and approximate weekly hours in your application.
For part-time positions, we will agree a practical arrangement that supports project continuity, collaboration and client needs. Project scope and responsibilities will be matched to the agreed hours.
Why join Lightmatters?
This is an opportunity to help develop an independent specialist practice and influence both its design work and the way it operates.
You will work closely with an experienced founder, contribute from early briefing through to completed installations, and build relationships across the design and construction industry. Collaboration with Bestec and other consultants provides access to broader project expertise while maintaining Lightmatters’ specialist focus.
Senior designers will lead projects and mentor others. Junior designers will gain practical experience and guidance across the design process.
We welcome people who enjoy asking why, testing ideas and finding solutions that are creative, technically credible and practical to deliver.
