About the role

As a Ganger, you will play a key role in maintaining the safety, reliability and performance of V/Line's rail infrastructure. Leading a team in the delivery of specialised track maintenance and renewal activities, you will supervise day-to-day operations while fostering a strong safety culture. In this hands on leadership role, you will ensure risks are identified, understood and effectively managed, providing a safe workplace for employees and maintaining a safe environment for customers, contractors and visitors

Key Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leading and overseeing the delivery of rail infrastructure maintenance and renewal activities, including the upkeep of rail reserves, level crossings, pedestrian accessways and associated infrastructure.
  • Supervising and actively participating in the renewal and replacement of track components, including sleepers, rail, ballast and fastening systems.
  • Coordinating maintenance and repair works across crossings, drainage systems, earthworks and other rail related structures and assets.
  • Ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of an assigned section of track through effective planning, supervision and resource allocation.
  • Conducting track inspections and monitoring infrastructure condition, including track geometry, rail wear, sleeper condition, fastening integrity, flooding risks and track defects, while implementing corrective actions as required.
  • Promoting a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with V/Line policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Responding to and managing Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) concerns raised by employees, contractors, customers and other stakeholders.
  • Providing leadership, guidance and support to team members to achieve operational, safety and performance objectives.

About you

Our ideal candidate for the Ganger role is a hands on rail professional with site supervision and leadership experience, backed by Cert III Rail Infrastructure,

Safe Working Certificate Level 3, High Rail Operator Level 4(desirable), and a current Driver's Licence. Safety focused and proactive, you excel at delivering rail maintenance and renewals, identifying and resolving track issues, and leading crews to achieve reliable outcomes. You embody V/Line's values of integrity, accountability, respect, and leadership while maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.

To be considered for this role, applicants must address the following key selection criteria within their application, as this forms part of our merit-based recruitment process:

  • Mandatory - Valid Current Driver’s License
  • Mandatory - Cert 3 Rail Infrastructure (Ganger Ticket)
  • Highly Desirable - Safe Working Certificate Level 3
  • Highly Desirable - High Rail operator - level 4
  • First Aid – Level 2 – may be required if designated First Aid Officer
  • Site supervision and hands on leadership experience

This position will be paid in line with the V/Line Asset Management Enterprise Agreement 2023, IMW (TRACK) 3.1.

The selection process may include aptitude assessments, a behavioural interview and a Medical risk category 1 check.
