The Position

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the Executive Team, the Director Legal Services will provide strategic leadership, governance and professional oversight of a national legal practice. Leading through a team of Principal Lawyers, the Director will ensure the delivery of high-quality, accessible and client-centred legal services across multiple Australian jurisdictions.

The Director will maintain rigorous professional standards, strengthen legal practice governance and promote quality and consistency across the organisation. They will oversee professional supervision, legal risk, ethical matters, complaints, litigation and compliance with legislative, professional and funding requirements.

Working closely with other executive leaders, the Director will support an integrated multidisciplinary service model encompassing legal assistance, social work and counselling, financial counselling, cultural support and community engagement. They will also contribute to organisational strategy and help shape future legal service pathways as existing redress and reparations processes evolve.

The successful candidate will be an admitted Australian Legal Practitioner who holds, or is immediately eligible to obtain, a principal practising certificate. They will bring significant post-admission experience and a strong record of leading legal practices, senior legal professionals and geographically dispersed teams.

Demonstrated expertise in legal practice management, professional supervision, governance, risk and service quality will be essential. The appointee will also bring executive-level judgement, ethical decision making, strong stakeholder engagement capability and a genuine commitment to social justice.

An understanding of the impacts of child sexual abuse, institutional abuse and complex trauma will be important, together with experience delivering trauma-informed and culturally safe services. The successful candidate will be a respectful, empathetic and credible leader who can balance professional rigour with compassion, collaboration and future-focused thinking.

Knowmore Legal Service is a national, independent community legal service providing free legal assistance and multidisciplinary support to survivors of child abuse. Its services help individuals pursue justice, seek redress and compensation, navigate complex systems and make informed decisions about their future.

Operating nationally, the organisation brings together legal professionals, social workers, financial counsellors, cultural support workers and community engagement specialists to deliver coordinated, client-centred services. Its work is underpinned by a commitment to respect, courage, integrity, collaboration and innovation.

This appointment comes at an important point in the organisation’s development. The Director Legal Services will safeguard the quality and integrity of its national legal practice while contributing to the development of future services that respond to the changing needs of survivors.

The position may be based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide and will involve interstate and intrastate travel.
