About the role
As Midwife Unit Manager – Maternity Assessment Centre, you will provide visible, accessible and accountable leadership for the daily operations, clinical governance and workforce management of the unit.
Working as a key member of the Women’s and Children’s leadership team, you will support the delivery of safe, timely, coordinated and woman-centred care within a multidisciplinary environment.
Reporting to the Operations Manager – Maternity Services, you will work collaboratively with Associate Midwife Unit Managers, Registered Midwives, medical leaders, the Best Care Division and broader teams to strengthen standards of care, consumer experience, staff engagement, workforce performance and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities
- Provide visible clinical and operational leadership within the Maternity Assessment Centre, modelling Western Health values and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate the daily operations of the unit, including activity, access, service utilisation, patient flow, escalation of risk, facilities, equipment and resource management.
- Lead, support and develop midwifery staff, including Associate Midwife Unit Managers and Registered Midwives, through coaching, feedback, performance development and professional development planning.
- Monitor and evaluate standards of care using clinical indicators, incidents, audit outcomes, consumer feedback, workforce metrics and operational performance data to identify priorities and drive improvement.
- Manage workforce and financial performance for the unit, including roster compliance, recruitment and retention, personal leave, annual leave, vacancy management, agency utilisation and budget monitoring.
- Lead accreditation readiness, quality improvement, practice development and evidence-based initiatives that support Best Care, timely care and improved outcomes for consumers and families.
About you
- Current registration as a Registered Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
- Minimum five years post-registration experience, including tertiary maternity service experience, with relevant postgraduate qualification and/or substantial clinical leadership experience.
- Demonstrated clinical leadership capability, with the ability to build, lead, nurture and empower high-performing teams within a complex maternity environment.
- Strong operational management skills, including workforce planning, roster management, budget monitoring, recruitment, performance development and management of key workforce indicators.
- Demonstrated commitment to safe, high-quality, person-centred care, including experience using clinical indicators, consumer feedback, incident data and audit outcomes to drive improvement.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills, with confidence working across multidisciplinary teams and supporting change within an evidence-based framework.
