About The Role

Whitsunday Regional Council is seeking an experienced GIS Technical Officer to join our Innovation and Technology Branch.

Reporting to the Senior GIS Officer, you will provide specialised GIS services, technical advice and practical spatial solutions across Council. You will support the integrity and effective use of Council’s spatial and asset-related information while contributing to GIS projects, system improvements and digital transformation initiatives. This is an opportunity to work across a diverse range of GIS activities, including spatial data management, mapping, system administration, web applications, data governance and stakeholder support.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Maintaining, validating and improving spatial and asset-related datasets.
  • Developing maps, dashboards, reports and web mapping applications.
  • Supporting GIS platforms, spatial databases, applications and system integrations.
  • Investigating and resolving complex spatial data and GIS system issues.
  • Providing specialist GIS advice and practical solutions to stakeholders.
  • Developing technical standards, governance frameworks, procedures and documentation.
  • Supporting GIS projects, platform upgrades and business improvement initiatives.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve services through spatial technology and data.
  • Sharing GIS knowledge and providing technical guidance to users across Council

About You

You are a collaborative and solutions-focused GIS professional who can translate complex spatial and technical information into practical business outcomes.

To Be Successful, You Will Have

  • A tertiary qualification in Geographic Information Systems, Spatial Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
  • Experience applying specialised GIS knowledge within a complex operational environment.
  • Experience supporting GIS platforms, spatial databases, web mapping applications and spatial data management processes.
  • Strong analytical, technical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to provide clear professional advice and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Experience developing technical standards, procedures and documentation.
  • A current C Class Driver’s Licence.

Experience in GIS system administration, ESRI technology, ArcGIS, spatial data integrations, platform upgrades or GIS improvement projects will be highly regarded.
