Risk Specialist, Climate Risk

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority

The role

The Risk Specialist in the Climate Risk team will lead and support in the development of climate risk insights relating to entity exposure to, and management of, climate-related financial risks. Activities span data-led risk monitoring, stress testing, deep-dive analytics and targeted support to supervisors across APRA-regulated industries. You will also support the Climate Risk team's broader domestic and international engagement activities, providing insights and strategic input to climate-specific initiatives.

The team

The Climate Risk team is part of APRA's System Risk branch in the Cross-industry Risk Division (CRD). CRD provides cross-industry data and insights, specialist advice and forward-looking analysis to strengthen supervisory judgement, policy development and strategic decision-making.

The Climate Risk team is APRA's centre of excellence for climate risk initiatives, supervision support, leadership and engagement on climate risk issues. The team delivers influential industry initiatives, supports the supervision of climate risk, and engages with a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders on the evolution of climate risk understanding in the financial sector. It also engages on related emerging risk areas such as nature risk.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and/or contribute to engagements with domestic and international stakeholders on climate risk issues;
  • Provide specialist technical advice on climate risk, and related topics such as nature risk;
  • Contribute to the appropriate integration of policy developments (e.g. ISSB, Basel Core Principles, Sustainable Finance Strategy, Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, etc.) into APRA's ongoing engagement on climate risk;
  • Actively contribute in cross-agency regulatory engagement (e.g., the Council of Financial Regulators Regulatory Climate Forum) and international processes (e.g., the Network for Greening the Financial System, International Association of Insurance Supervisors);
  • Contribute to thinking on complex and ambiguous challenges impacting entity understanding of climate risk; and
  • Collaborate within a team of professionals to deliver high-quality outcomes, modelling inclusive leadership behaviours and instilling an open culture where divergent views are shared and respected.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify strategic issues and develop and implement appropriate solutions;
  • An ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solve;
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with peers, team members and external stakeholders in a professional team environment;
  • Excellent organisational, communication, presentation, prioritisation and analytical skills;
