Role Description

The Mechanical Engineer (HVAC) – Intermediate will contribute to the design, documentation, and coordination of mechanical building services, with a focus on HVAC systems for a variety of building types. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing load calculations, preparing detailed HVAC designs and specifications, reviewing shop drawings, and supporting BIM modelling and coordination with other discipline designs. The role involves collaborating closely with project managers, contractors, and other engineers to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and client requirements, as well as assisting with on-site inspections and resolving technical issues during construction. The engineer will also participate in value engineering, contribute to R&D and continuous improvement of design methodologies, and support the preparation of technical reports and project documentation. This is a full-time, office based role located approximately 20km from CBD Greater Melbourne Area.

Key Responsibilities

· Undertake HVAC design for a range of projects, including heating and cooling load calculations, air and water system design, ductwork and pipework sizing, and plant/equipment selection.

· Prepare design documentation including drawings, schematics, specifications, schedules and design reports to Adept quality standards.

· Perform calculations and modelling for thermal loads, energy, ventilation, acoustics and pressurization using industry software (e.g. AIRAH tools, IES-VE, CAMEL, Revit MEP).

· Ensure compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant Australian Standards (including AS 1668.1/.2 ventilation, AS/NZS 3666 microbial control, AS/NZS 3000, AS 1668.4) and project-specific requirements.

· Coordinate mechanical services with architects, other building services disciplines and structural engineers, including clash resolution in a BIM/Revit environment.

· Support project delivery through the design phases, contract administration, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and attending design and site meetings.

· Assist with commissioning and defect inspections, and witness testing where required.

· Mentor and check the work of graduate engineers and drafters, providing technical guidance and quality review.

· Contribute to fee and scope estimates and help manage design programs and deliverable timelines on assigned projects.

Skills & Experience

Essential

· Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) accredited by Engineers Australia.

· Approximately 3–6 years of HVAC design experience within a building services consultancy or similar environment.

· Sound working knowledge of the NCC and relevant Australian Standards for mechanical services.

· Proficiency in HVAC load, energy and ventilation calculations and system/equipment selection.

· Experience with Revit MEP and AutoCAD; familiarity with BIM coordination workflows.

· Strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to manage your own tasks across multiple projects.

· Current Australian working rights and a valid driver’s licence.

· Membership of AIRAH and/or Engineers Australia.
