Project Manager - Substations & BESS

Gamuda Engineering, a fully owned subsidiary of Gamuda Berhad, is a reputable Engineering and Construction contractor that specialises in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of Transport, Civil and Energy Infrastructure projects. With a proved track record in delivering innovative and complex infrastructure projects in Australia and internationally, Gamuda’s strategy is to invest in, develop and construct large-scale renewable energy projects with a focus on wind, solar and BESS developments and EPC projects.

We are currently mobilising our team to delivery one of Victoria’s most significant renewable energy projects in southwest Victoria, an integrated 450 MW solar and 600 MW BESS hybrid project.

The role

As the Project Manager - Substations & BESS, you will play a pivotal role in our renewable energy project portfolio, taking lead ownership of the high-voltage substation and battery energy storage system (BESS) packages. You will lead the delivery of these critical work packages, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, on budget, and to the required quality and technical standards.

Specific responsibilities will include:

• Planning, budgeting, and executing substation and BESS work packages from detailed design phase through to construction, commissioning, and grid integration.
• Developing and managing detailed construction programs and project schedules to ensure seamless alignment with the broader project delivery milestones.
• Leading, mentoring, and developing a high-performing project team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
• Working closely with our design team to manage technical and design interfaces across engineering disciplines to resolve constructability and design issues.
• Informing procurement and commercial packages, providing critical input into equipment vendor selection (including leading OEMs), contract clarifications, and subcontractor negotiations.
• Interfacing and cultivating relationships with key external stakeholders, including client representatives, TNSPs, equipment suppliers, AEMO, and relevant regulatory authorities.
• Ensuring rigorous compliance with all contractual, technical, and regulatory requirements, while actively advocating for a culture of health, safety, and environmental excellence on site.

Your skills and experience

You will be an experienced Project Manager with a strong track record of delivering complex infrastructure and power generation projects. Specific qualifications and skills include:

• Tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related Project Management discipline.
• Proven experience delivering substation, transmission, BESS, or large-scale renewable energy projects (such as solar or wind) under EPC delivery models.
• A strong understanding of NEM grid connection processes, high-voltage electrical design, and commissioning compliance requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to negotiate, manage, and execute contracts with subcontractors, key suppliers, and consultants.
• Exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, with a proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and influence positive project outcomes
