About the Role

We're seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to join a respected member-based organisation in Sydney. Reporting to the Director, this role provides legal, governance and compliance support across a range of regulatory and operational matters. You will join a collaborative and highly experienced team, contributing to the delivery of high-quality advice and stakeholder outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing legal and strategic advice on legislative interpretation, governance matters, compliance issues and organisational policy.
  • Reviewing and assessing applications against established eligibility and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting governance and decision-making processes through legal research, written advice and recommendations.
  • Managing matters relating to risk, compliance and stakeholder obligations.
  • Liaising with members, stakeholders and external bodies on regulatory and operational matters.
  • Assisting with the development and review of policies, procedures and compliance frameworks.
  • Supporting broader organisational projects, communications and educational initiatives.

About You

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years' PAE and enjoy working in a small, collaborative environment. This role would suit someone seeking a blend of legal advisory work, governance and operational involvement.

You will also have:

  • Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to hold an unrestricted practising certificate.
  • Experience within a regulatory, governance, compliance, professional services or government environment.
  • Strong understanding of administrative law, statutory interpretation and regulatory frameworks, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge in new areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and practically.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and key deadlines.
  • A professional, collaborative approach and interest in governance, compliance and public-interest outcomes.
